Avatar: The Way of Waterarrives in cinemas in less than two months. As promotion for the sequel to James Cameron’s 2009 mega hit movie continues starZoe Saldanahas revealed the stunning personal record she set for holding her breath underwater while filming. As the title suggests, water has a prominent part to play in the new installment of Cameron’s plannedAvatarfranchise and that meant the cast had to undergo some intense training to hold their breath for the filming of certain scenes, and Saldana made it to an impressive personal best, although not as good as another returning star.
While Cameron and the cast of the epic secondAvatarmovie were speaking toThe New York Times, the subject of the prolonged time spent underwater came up. During the interview Saldana revealed that she had managed to keep her breath held for 5 minutes while recording motion-capture scenes for the movie. While Saldana’s ability to go without breathing was certainly a feat, the director revealed that someone else managed to top that by more than 90 seconds. They said:
SALDANA: “I got almost up to five minutes. That’s a big accomplishment, you guys.”
CAMERON: “Five minutes is huge. Sig[ourney Weaver] did six and a half.”
Of course there is very little that James Cameron has not pushed to its limit when filming hisAvatarsequel and that has meant that the cast have also had to push themselves in order to deliver the performances needed both in and out of the water.
