There have been several different iterations of theBatmancostume over the years, and the director reveals he had a “strong idea” of what he wanted to do with the costume right away.

“I think that’s it. I had a really strong idea about what I wanted to do – I really wanted to do sort of a fabric-basedBatman; not what’s become the more normal, armoredBatman. That’s how we evolved it.”

Batman vs Superman

Fans got their first look atBen Affleck’sBatmanlast May, whenZack Snyderrevealed the first official photo of the character and his new Batmobile on his Twitter account. While this costume certainly isn’t “armored,” it also won’t be the only costume he wears in the movie. We have seen photos and footage of Batman’s heavily armored “mech” suit, which he wears while doing battle withHenry Cavill’sSuperman. Shortly afterBen Affleckwas cast, a report surfaced that described his version of Bruce Wayne as “weary,” after spending several years fighting crime in Gotham City. Here’s what the director had to say about his Batman approach.

“I definitely wanted an olderBatman. I wanted a war-wearyBatman. That’s why, in a lot of ways, Ben was really perfect for me – we kind of aged him a little bit. It worked really great. I’m really excited about the Batman we created.”

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justicewas first announced at Comic Con 2013, shortly after the release ofMan of Steel. At the end of the panel,Zack Snyderbrought outHarry Lennix, who recited a line fromFrank Miller’s iconic graphic novelThe Dark Knight Returns, before fans were shown the Batman v Superman logo for the first time. The director revealed thatThe Dark Knight Returnsdefinitely had an “influence” on his approach toBatman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but it isn’t a direct adaptation.

“There are so many great artists who have drawnBatman. So many great comics that have been created – it’s countless. I was talking toFrankabout it:Dark Knight Returnswas such a big influence on me, that I wanted to to honor him through imagery in the movie. You could still makeDark Knight Returnsinto a movie, if you want. That’s what I’m saying, as far as how much we used and how much we didn’t use. The visual elements, there are some that I homage, but I don’t think the movie [is an adaptation].”

We’ve included the video from the Bob Kane tribute. You can see some ofZack Snyder’s speech. This is what he offered as his own personal vision of Bob Kane’s creation. essentially, he called us all, ‘The Batman!’

“Because Batman - unlike Superman, or Wonder Woman, or Flash - is a guy without powers. He’s a man. He’s all of us. I think that’s it. We all carry around a hero inside of ourselves every day. It’s that guy. It’s Batman… In truth, we’re all the Batman.”
