Now that 20th Century Fox has wrapped up itsX-Menprequel trilogy withX-Men: Apocalypse, many are wondering what’s next for the franchise. The studio is developing spinoffsThe New MutantsandX-Force, withDeadpool 2rumored to start shooting this fall, and writer-producerSimon Kinbergrecently teased that the nextX-Menmovie will be set in the 90s. While we’ll have to wait and see which of these projects moves forward first, directorBryan Singerrecently teased that he’d like to seeJennifer Lawrence’s Mystique get her own solo outing.
The director recently appeared on theEmpirepodcast, alongsideSimon Kinberg, where the subject of a potentialMystiquemovie was brought up. While he wouldn’t say much about the potential project, he did seem interested in taking it on. Here’s what the filmmaker had to say below.
“People have asked if I’d do a stand-alone [movie about Mystique]. I think she’s right. She has that view of the world.”
This statement comes just a few days after the director also teased that he wants to bring theoriginal X-Men castfrom the first trilogy back for a new movie. We saw several of these cast members reunite in 2014’sX-Men: Days of Future Past, which featured members of both the original and prequel trilogies together, which also created a new present-day timeline that essentially wiped out events from the previous movies. There have been rumors thatdirector Bryan Singerwill start filmingX-Men 7sometime next year in Montreal, with the studio eyeing a 2018 release date, but that has yet to be confirmed.
Back in March,Jennifer Lawrencerevealed that she would love to come back for moreX-Menmovies, stating that she loves ensemble movies like theX-Menmovies, because the story “isn’t on anyone’s shoulders.” With that being said, it’s possible that the actress may not be interested in the idea of a Mystique spinoff, since she would have to carry the entire movie on her shoulders. While promoting 2014’sX-Men: Days of Future Past,Simon Kinbergrevealed that he loved whatJennifer Lawrencewas doing as Mystique, which lends itself to a spinoff.
“I love what Jen Lawrence has done with Mystique, and I feel like because she is in such a crowded ensemble, there’s so much more opportunity if you were to follow her solo.”
Jennifer Lawrencehas also spoken out against the blue makeup she has to wear as Mystique in these movies, which is likely why she was largely seen without her traditional blue look in most ofX-Men: Apocalypse. Mystique was originally portrayed byRebecca Romijn, a villainous sidekick to Magneto (Ian McKellen). Now that the franchise has changed the timeline, it’s possible that they could explore new stories where Mystique is actually a hero, but we don’t know for sure.
