CouldFrozen 2actually give Elsa a girlfriend? Co-director of the movie Jennifer Lee has weighed in on the topic. This first came up in 2016, when a fan petition was started to give Idina Menzel’s character a female love interest in the sequel, following the release of a report revealing that Disney had never featured a gay or lesbian character in a movie. Not much has been revealed aboutFrozen 2yet, but Lee won’t budge one way or the other at the present time on this topic.

Jennifer Lee addressed the topic ofElsa possibly having a female love interestat the premiere forA Wrinkle in Time. She was asked directly about the petitions and demand by fans for such a thing to happen. She didn’t give a direct answer, but acknowledged that the outpouring from fans on the topic has been touching. Here’s what she had to say about it.

“I love everything people are saying [and] people are thinking about with our film, that it’s creating dialogue, that Elsa is thiswonderful character that speaks to so many people. It means the world to us that we’re part of these conversations. Where we’re going with it, we have tons of conversations about it, and we’re really conscientious about these things. For me … Elsa’s every day telling me where she needs to go, and she’ll continue to tell us. I always write from character-out, and where Elsa is andwhat Elsa’s doing in her life, she’s telling me every day. We’ll see where we go.”

Disney has made some progress on providing representation to the LGBTQ community in their movies recently, but they still have yet to truly feature an openly gay or lesbian character in a movie. Josh Gad’s Lefou fromBeauty and the Beastwas supposed to be openly gay, but that was not deliberate in the movie and was only very subtly hinted at. There’s also Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie inThor: Ragnarok. Thompson played her as bisexual and director Taika Waititi wanted her to have a female love interest, which is still in the movie but not at all evident. There are no real scenes that signify she’s not a straight woman. And a lesbian romance was ultimately cut fromBlack Pantheras well. So how doesIdina Menzel feel about this? In May of 2016, she revealed that she supports the idea.

“I think it’s great that she’s stirring it up. Disney’s just gotta contend with that. I’ll let them figure that out. No matter what, (Elsa) changed my life.”

The odds of Disney actually giving Elsa a girlfriend, or even portraying her as a lesbian inFrozen 2are very slim. There’s no question that this is going to be amovie aimed at younger audiencesand if they won’t even pull the trigger in a movie likeBlack Panther, there’s almost no way it ends up happening inFrozen 2. Still, it seems like something that the filmmakers are interested in representing. This may come down to the higher ups being scared to pull the trigger.Frozen 2is set for release on August 11, 2025.
