To honor the millions of people who have battled with cancer,Florence Pugh didn’t accept any help from the hair and make-up teams, as she shaved her head for the role.We Live in Timefollows Almut (Pugh) and Tobias (Garfield) who, after a chance encounter, fall in love and build a life together, eventually starting a family.
Speaking toVanity Fair, Florence Pugh discussed why she shaved her head for the role, saying thatwearing any kind of wig or bald cap would be dishonest and insulting to those who have genuinely fought cancer.Before Pugh’s role inWe Live in Timewas revealed, images of the actress at the Met Gala emerged, with the press assuming the actress was ‘taking back her identity,’ a statement which Pugh says is “something I’ve never said in my entire life.” The actress then recalled anearly conversation with director John Crowley about potentially getting her a bald cap.

“I just stopped him mid-sentence and I was like, ‘John, no one can play a character like this in a movie like this and not do the thing that is needed to be done.' And if you don’t want to do it, I believe that you shouldn’t be doing a story like this.”

“The number of facets that were revealed of that relationship — good, bad, and indifferent — almost made it feel like a Cubist painting to me. It was like seeing something from lots of different perspectives simultaneously, rather than it being a great, big sweeping narrative.”

“Especially as Brits, we grow up with the quirkiest and most beautiful of love stories. And I think it’s been a long time since we’ve had one of those. When I read it, I just fell in love with the idea of getting to be in one of those movies that will matter to a lot of people, and will live for a long time. And it’s about the simplest of things, which is that we are here, I personally believe, for one reason only: to love and be loved.”
