After what must have been torturous months of endless waiting,Star Warsfans can finally rest easy, becauseStar Wars: Rogue Oneis finally here. The first everStar Warsstandalone movie hits theaters this weekend and is introducing a ton of new characters to the franchise. One such character,Alan Tudyk’s very blunt and loveable violent droidK-2SO, almost looked quite a bit different than what we actually see in the movie.
In honor of the release ofRogue One: A Star Wars Storyin theaters this weekend,Entertainment Weeklydecided to give fans a little cherry on top of theirStar Warssundae by publishing a batch of never-before-seen concept art from the movie. Several of the new photos show early designs for K-2SO, which make him look much more like a C-3PO knock off, but with some attitude and more dingy coloring. There is also a bit of art that shows several different designs for K-2SO’s head, which went through quite a few different versions before what we ultimately saw was fleshed out. Certain elements from theseearly designsstayed with the character, such as the general color scheme, but the end result was dramatically different. As is the case with some of the other core characters inRogue One. you may see the majority of the arthere.
One of the newly released pieces of concept art fromChristian Alzmannreveals an early take on what the band of Rebels who steals the Death Star plans could have looked like. Aside from a dramatically different K-2SO, there were a couple of alien members of the team including Senna, who is described as a “Chewie type,” and Lunka, “something that could skitter into an air duct, almost like a little thief.” Outside of that, the human characters were entirely white and in its final form, the central cast ofRogue One: A Star Wars Storywound up being pretty diverse.
Aside from that, there were several other pieces of concept art fromStar Wars: Rogue One, like a look at a Tank Trooper, whichJyn Erso(Felicity Jones) almost impersonated in the movie. There was also a version of a ship that belonged to Jyn Erso and a look at her disguised as an Imperial Ground Trooper. As far as K-2SO goes, EW also released the cover of the upcomingThe Art of Rogue One: A Star Wars Storybook, which featuresAlan Tudyk’s newdroidon the cover.
The buzz onRogue One: A Star Wars Storyhas been incredibly positive so far from both fans and critics, which is encouraging for Disney since they plan on making quite a few more of these spinoff movies. It has already been made clear that there won’t be a sequel to this movie, so art like this will help feed the appetite of the hungryStar Warsfans.
