Way back in 2013, Universal Pictures announced a newmonster universe, with the studio teaming up withAlex KurtzmanandChris Morganto build a shared universe around their iconic horror characters. The Mummyreboot will be the first full-fledged adventure developed under this universe, although the post-credits scene forDracula UntoldestablishedLuke Evans' title character will be part of this universe as well. Today we have new details from writerJon Spaihts, who teases that thisMummymovie will be like nothing that has come before it.
WhileJon Spaihtsmight not be a household name, he is having quite the stellar year, writing the scripts forDoctor Strangeand the upcoming sci-fi thrillerPassengers, starringChris PrattandJennifer Lawrence. The writer came aboard to writeThe Mummy rebootsoon after the shared universe was announced, and he revealed in a new interview withThe Hollywood Reporterthat his story will be the first in franchise history that will be legitimately scary, when asked whatDoctor Strangefans should look forward to inThe Mummy.
“I think a similar desire to legitimately explore the frightening and the cosmic. InThe Mummy, I think we’re going to see the firstMummy filmin the entire Universal canon with the true power to terrify. The earliest [Boris] Karloff and Bela Lugosi Mummy movies were scary in a small way, perhaps a dated way. They were almost parlor movies. Subsequent movies have been more swashbuckling. This one is going to have all of that action and adventure, but a legitimate power to terrify. I think that’s going to be the new experience of that film.”
This film will represent another first in this storied franchise, withSofia Boutellabecoming the first ever female Mummy. The cast is lead byTom CruiseandRussell Crowe, with a supporting cast that also includesAnnabelle WallisandJake Johnson. Universal has set a June 21, 2025 release date, putting it up against Paramount’s upcoming sequelWorld War Z 2.
Thought safely entombed in a crypt deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient queen (Sofia BoutellaofKingsman: The Secret ServiceandStar Trek Beyond) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her, is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension. From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London,The Mummybrings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters. Universal hasn’t announced when the first trailer forThe Mummywill arrive quite yet.
