Was Andrew Garfield Asked to Return for Marvel's Spider-Man?

Before Marvel and Sony Pictures finally decided to join forces for a newSpider-Manreboot, which hasTom Hollandset to star as a much younger Spidey, the studio was still developing another sequel toThe Amazing Spider-ManandThe Amazing Spider-Man 2, withAndrew Garfieldset to return asPeter Parker. The Marvel/Sony deal pleased a great deal of fans, since it allows for Spidey to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the first time, but some fans still wanted to seeAndrew Garfieldreturn as the beloved character.Andrew Garfieldrevealed in a recent interview withUproxxthat he wasn’t asked to come back, although he wouldn’t go into too many details. When asked if Marvel ever approached him about putting on the Spidey suit one more time, he had this to say.

“No. To be honest [pauses], all the ins and outs of what happened is a more tender conversation that maybe I don’t want to talk about in public in a press situation. But all I can say is that I’m stoked to go and watch a Marvel film ofSpider-Man. I’m really, really grateful for the whole ride of it. And I’m really excited for the next one.”

Sony had controlled theSpider-Manrights for years, but after Marvel Studios started coming into their own, many wondered if the webbed wonder would ever have a place in the MCU. Now the newSpider-Manplayed byTom Hollandwill make his first appearance inCaptain America: Civil War, arriving in theaters next summer, before the newSpider-Mandebuts in the summer of 2017.Andrew Garfieldrevealed that he had been trying to get Sony to “hook up” with Marvel since he first signed on.

“I’ve been petitioning to hook up with Marvel since the beginning, so I’m really glad they’re finally doing it.”

During the Sony hack, leaked emails revealed that neither Marvel nor Sony were interested in bringing backAndrew Garfieldto play Spidey. However, in this interview, he reveals that he was starting to “workshop ideas” with screenwriterAlex Kurtzman, who was once set to write the sequel. Here’s what the actor had to say about this sequel that now won’t happen.

“I was actually starting to workshop ideas withAlex Kurtzman, who was going to be writing it. We thought to kind of start from the base level, the foundational level of where have we left Peter and where do we want to see him go and what’s logical. And how do we build upon where we left off with this deep, desperate moment with Gwen? So, yeah, we got to some pretty heavy places and I was really excited to kind of explore it and be involved on the ground level like that. But, anyway, it wasn’t meant to be. As I say, I’m just really excited that I get to watch.”

This newSpider-Manmovie will kick off a trilogy that is entirely set in high school. 19-year-oldTom Hollandis much younger than bothAndrew GarfieldandTobey Maguirewere when they took on the iconic role, so setting an entire trilogy in high school does make sense. This reboot will also discard the well-worn origin story, starting out with Peter established as Spidey, as he tries to balance school with his crime-fighting escapades.

BothThe Amazing Spider-ManandThe Amazing Spider-Man 2weren’t complete bombs at the box office, but they both underperformed and suffered from a spate of negative reviews, which lead to this new reboot, the third in nearly 15 years.
