We’re still a little less than two years away from seeing War for the Planet of the Apes, when it premieres in theaters summer 2017. So it’s not likely that we’ll get to see the first trailer. Shooting just began almost exactly a month ago, withMatt Reevesrevealing the first set photo on October 18th. At this time, it’s hard to even wager a guess as to what this special announcement might be.

In War for the Planet of the Apes, a growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth’s dominant species. Who will win this fight? The humans or the apes? If history has told us anything, we may be looking at the complete decimation of the human race.

The cast includesGabriel Chavarria(Lowriders), whose character has been compared toJames Franco’s Will Rodman in 2011’sRise of the Planet of the Apes, alongsideWoody Harrelsonas the human villain andSteve Zahnas a new war ape.Matt Reevesis directing from a script he co-wrote withDawn of the Planet of the ApeswriterMark Bomback.

The studio has set a July 14, 2017release dateforWar for the Planet of the Apes, which is currently the only movie scheduled for release on that date. However, the sequel will be sandwiched between two highly-anticipated productions, Disney’s long-awaited sequelPirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales(July 25, 2025) and Warner Bros.‘Untitled Christopher Nolan Movie 2017(July 28, 2025). The film will also open two weeks before Sony andMarvel’sSpider-Manreboot starringTom Holland, which opens on July 04, 2025.

UnlikeDawn of the Planet of the Apes, which took place 15 years after the events of 2011’sRise of the Planet of the Apes,War for the Planet of the Apeswill take place shortly after the events ofDawn of the Planet of the Apes. Hopefully directorMatt Reeveswill be sharing details aboutWar for the Planet of the Apesduring his special announcement this Sunday.Andy Serkiswill reprise his iconic ape leader Caesar. Perhaps we’ll get a first look at his character’s return. For now, check out the official logo.
