Last October, Showtime put months of speculation to rest by confirming that they will producenew episodesofTwin Peaks, written by the show’s original creatorsDavid LynchandMark Frost, slated to debut sometime in 2016. The 2016 debut was significant, since, Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee) told Special Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan), “I’ll see you again in 25 years,” in the series finale back in 1991. Unfortunately, it seems the new series won’t be able to hit that mark entirely, withDeadlinereporting that the newTwin Peakswon’t arrive until the year 2017.
CBS Corporation CEO Leslie Moonves relayed the news during the company’s third quarter earnings conference call earlier today, although a specific premiere date was not given. This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about a possible 2017 delay. Back in July, series co-creatorMark Frostrevealed thatproductionwill begin in September, but the premiere was pushed until “sometime in 2017.” Just one month later, Showtime’s David Nevins confirmed that shooting will start in September, adding that it “may” be ready in 2016, but the network doesn’t want to rushDavid LynchandMark Frost.
The series hit a stumbling block back in April, whenDavid Lynchconfirmed that he pulled out of the series because Showtime didn’t offer him enough money that he needed to direct the series the way he wanted it to be done. Both sides resolved their issues in May, and it was also reported that the show would be expanded from the originally-planned nine-episode run to 18 episodes. It was later confirmed that the show would in fact be expanded, but an exact episode count has yet to be determined.
The reason there hasn’t been a specific episode count released is because, instead of writing scripts for individual episodes,David LynchandMark Frostwrote one massive script.David Lynchis directing the script like one huge movie, and cutting the show into individual episodes in post-production, so we likely won’t know how many new episodes Showtime will air for quite some time. Story details have not been released yet, and it isn’t known how long principal photography will continue for.
Kyle MacLachlanis currently the only confirmedcast member, but there have been rumors that Mädchen Amick (Shelly Johnson),Sherilyn Fenn(Audrey Horne),Sheryl Lee(Laura Palmer) andDana Ashbrook(Bobby Brooks) will reprise their roles as well. Rumored new cast members include Balthazar Getty,Robert Knepper,Robert Forster,Peter Sarsgaardand the latest unconfirmed addition,Jennifer Jason Leigh.
