Controversy arose over the weekend when an internet personality claimedAlicia Vikanderhad breasts that were way too small to be portrayed in true Lara Croft form for the newTomb Raiderreboot. The social media musing currently has over 2,000 comments, most of them slamming the comments and ironically, making fun of the body types of some of the people responding in the thread.Tomb Raideropens this weekend and hasn’t gotten the best reviews from critics who have seen the movie, which currently has a 52 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
The Amazing Atheist took to Twitter over the weekend to complain about Alicia Vikander’s breasts asLara Croftin the newTomb Raidermovie. The comments section quickly turned into a warzone of people trying to stand up for Vikander. Amazing Atheist had this to say.
“Do I have to be the asshole who says her tits are too small for me to see her as Lara Croft? Do I have to be that guy? Do I have to be the one who fucking says it? I guess I do. Sorry.”
While many fans were attacking the original comments, many were in agreement. Lara Croft is known as being a bit more on thevoluptuousfrom the original video games and previous movies that had Angelina Jolie as the star. Fans of theTomb Raiderfranchise quickly rushed in to reply to Amazing Atheist’s comments about Alicia Vikander’s body. One woman noted that when Lara Croft first came on the scene as avideo game, her breasts were triangles. She explains.
“When Tomb Raider was released in 1996 (for console and PC), Lara Croft’s boobs were triangular. Let’s stop acting like thesize/shape of a woman’s breastspredict her ability to play Lara Croft. It doesn’t really matter whether you see Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft… she is, deal with it.”
Amazing Atheist replied to some of the hate, accusing some of the women in the comments section of “smelling their farts.” The comments were obviously made to get a rise out of people and he succeeded.
On the other side of the argument, severalTomb Raiderfans agreed with comments about Alicia Vikander’s slim, athletic body. One Twitter user said, “Another franchise ruined by sjws… In this case, yes, when I watch a tomb raider movie, I want to see Lara Croft in all her glory.” While the fans who want to see a return to the voluptuous body of Lara Croft are present, they are definitely the minority in the comments. And, as previously mentioned, many of the women who were defending Alicia Vikander’s body were making fun of the appearances of some of the men commenting.
SomeTomb Raiderfans brought up the simple fact that the new version of the movie is based on the 2013 game reboot, which was a lot less sexist than earlier installments. Original game developers blamed the technology at the time when Lara Croft first came on the scene, noting that they couldn’t make long hair, so they had to amplify her other assets, so everybody knew that she was female. The choice ended up selling a lot more games and starting a movie franchise.
