Tom Cruiseis about to break one of his big movie traditions to make sureMission: Impossible - The Final Reckoningdoes not become a box office flop and hits theaters hyped to the hilt. According to a new report fromPuck’s Matt Belloni, Cruise will be doing more press rounds for what is still being touted as his final outing as Ethan Hunt than many of his previous movies to ensure it gets as much coverage as possible.

While it is not unusual for lead actors to make many appearances ahead of their new movie’s release, Cruise has been quite restrictive in the past about who he speaks to. As the report stated, this time, it looks like Cruise is not holding back quite as much as usual to getMission: Impossible – The Final Reckoningin as many headlines as possible.

Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible – The Final Reckoning

“Speaking of publicity, it’s interesting to see Tom Cruise giving an interview to People for a ‘special issue’ celebrating ‘Mission: Impossible’. No, it’s hardly a 60 Minutes profile (the biggest news from the chat seems to be that Tom sometimes eats an insanely large breakfast), but Cruise and his publicist, Amanda Lundberg, have limited his press in recent years to U.K. movie mag Empire and… basically nothing beyond his social channels, stunts on the late Late Late Show With James Corden, and his global premiere events, where he chats with hundreds of outlets for 30 seconds apiece—nothing beyond the approved talking points.”

Tom Cruise has faced many adversaries on screen, but this could be a real impossible mission.

Is Tom Cruise Really Doing More P.R for ‘Mission: Impossible 8’?

Although it seems that Cruise has opened himself up to more appearances ahead of his new Mission: Impossible movie’s release, that still doesn’t mean he will be sitting through endless hours of interviews with random YouTube channels and every tabloid publication. As the report continues:

“I’m told Cruise is set to appear on ‘The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon’ in the run-up to ‘The Final Reckoning’, which will premiere at Cannes on May 14 and hit theaters May 23. Cruise hasn’t done Fallon since 2018, when his ‘Mad Lib Theater’ bit went viral. It’s hardly a full-on P.R. blitz, but given that the most recent Mission underperformed at the box office, Cruise seems to understand he needs to be a tiny bit more available.”

Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning

All of this makes sense considering the wayMission: Impossible – Dead Reckoningdisappointed at the box officein 2023. Although the film still made over $570 million worldwide, its astronomical budget – down in no small part to Covid filming delays and several rounds of reshoots – meant that the film’s profit was hardly worth writing home about. WithThe Final Reckoninghaving a budget of anything between $350 million and $400 million depending on which report you believe, it has some hefty lifting to do when it is released later this month. While projections have suggestedit is looking at a $100-120 million opening domestic weekend, even that is no guarantee of how well a film does in the weeks that follow, asCaptain America: Brave New Worldproved earlier this year.
