When the team for theThunderbolts*was first announced at San Diego Comic-Con, it came as a surprise to nobody that two of the characters put at the forefront were Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) and Bucky Barnes, aka the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan). The former is one of the most popular and highly sought-after actors working today, and the latter is a mainstay in the Marvel Cinematic Universe who hasn’t had a permanent place in a superhero team. Now, Director Jake Schreier has spoken about how Bucky fits into the Thunderbolts superhero team.

In an interview with ScreenRant, Schreier discussed how Bucky’s extensive and complicated history in the MCU up to this point has helped shape the character’s narrative trajectory inThunderbolts*. As it turns out, the long road to Winter Soldier being redeemed is something that will come in handy for the hero as he works to bring the rag-tag group of anti-heroes together:

Sebastian Stan as Bucky in Thunderbolts

“First off, just to have Sebastian Stan in your movie is such a privilege. But also, he’s been through a lot of what they’ve been through, and he’s resolved a lot of those arcs that they have not yet resolved. And so the challenge there was really like, ‘What is a new arc that we can take Bucky on?’ This idea of watching him attempt to uncomfortably fit and embracing a new path, and wondering if there’s some new path to helping the world. Having done all of this stuff and having been in so many of these movies, there’s a kind of meta angle to it also.”

‘Thunderbolts*’ is Bucky’s Chance to Share His Redemption With Others

Characters such as the Red Guardian, Ghost, Yelena, and John Walker have all played supporting roles in previous MCU projects, or were even straight-up antagonists, in the case of Walker and Ghost. However, none of them have been given as many appearances in subsequent films that allowed them room to breathe and deal with the repercussions of their checkered past. Bucky, however, will be enteringThunderbolts*with the mindset of helping guide the broken characters to the same inner peace he found.

‘Thunderbolts*’ Star Reveals How New All-Powerful character Would Fare Against Homelander, Superman, and Omni Man

Lewis Pullman briefly discusses how he thinks Sentry would fare against other characters with similar powersets.

Jake Schreier believes Bucky’s place in the Thunderbolts could benefit both the other characters and himself, as he would say in the same interview: “Maybe in the end, even though it seems so unexpected, this group of misfits could be exactly the right home for him because he has so much wisdom to offer them, having gone through what they have not yet processed.” Thefirst reactions toThunderbolts*have praised the film for its emotional depth, and it seems Bucky will play a significant role in contributing to that.

The Sentry next to Avenger tower in Thunderbolts

It will be interesting to see how Bucky Barnes' role is expanded upon inThunderbolts*and beyond. The character’s time alongside Captain America and the Avengers was somewhat short-lived, so seeing him develop alongside a team he leads can reveal new sides to Bucky. With the new team also set to make an appearance inAvengers: Doomsday, Bucky will have another opportunity to show new sides of himself and his dynamic with his fellow Thunderbolts.
