Legendary filmmakerJohn Carpenterhas further teased Blumhouse Productions’ reboot of beloved science fiction monster movie,The Thing…but sadly he is not allowed to talk about it. Asked byComicBook.comwhether there had been any updates on the upcoming remake, Carpenter confirmed that there have been updates, but he has been sworn to silence over what those updates are.
“There are updates that I am not allowed to speak of. We’ll see, we shall see. Never say never in the movie business, never say never.”
The proposed reboot will reportedly be based onFrozen Hell, the unearthed expanded version of John W. Campbell Jr’s novella “Who Goes There?,” which served as the basis for Carpenter’sThe Thing. So, while it is expected to be a reboot, rather than the sequel that fans ofThe Thingwould perhaps prefer, Blumhouse’s take on the story should include a number of substantial differences. Hopefully, these will satisfyingly separate the project from Carpenter’sThe Thing. So, while Carpenter is unable to give anything away, it sounds like The Thing reboot is slowly moving forward.
Released in 1982,The Thingis a wonderful tale of severe isolation, taking place in remote Antarctica. The Thing follows a group of American research scientists who believe they are doing the right thing when taking in a dog. Unfortunately, this will be just their first mistake, as the dog reveals itself to be a parasitic alien being that can assume the shape of its victims. It falls on a resourceful helicopter pilot and the camp doctor to lead the camp crew in a desperate, gory battle against the vicious creature before it picks them all off, one by one.
Starring Kurt Russell and Kurt Russell’s magnificent bead as the team’s helicopter pilot, R.J. MacReady, alongside A. Wilford Brimley, T. K. Carter, David Clennon, Keith David, Richard Dysart, Charles Hallahan, Peter Maloney, Richard Masur, Donald Moffat, Joel Polis, and Thomas G. Waites in supporting roles, The Thing received negative reviews upon release, but is now considered a sci-fi classic thanks to its brutal claustrophobia, a magnetic central performance from Kurt Russell, and the defining practical effects that were used to create the memorably grotesque body horror.

Blumhouse Will First Reboot Firestarter, With John Carpenter Set to Compose the Score
Before setting their sights onThe Thing, Blumhouse Productions will first reignite theFirestarterfranchise with an upcoming reboot. Based on the novel of the same name by Stephen King,Firesarterwill act as a reboot of the 1984 movie adaptation by director Mark L. Lester and starring Drew Barrymore.
Firestarterfollows a young father who must protect his daughter after she develops pyrokinesis and is hunted by a secret government agency that intends to capture and control her. StarringZac Efronas protective father Andrew “Andy” McGee, alongside Ryan Kiera Armstrong, Sydney Lemmon, Michael Greyeyes, and Kurtwood Smith,Firestarteris scheduled to be released in the United States by Universal Pictures simultaneously in theaters and on Peacock on August 03, 2025.
