The Pitt, the latest medical drama to premiere on Max, has been keeping viewers on the edge of their seats with its unique narrative style based on real-time,white-knuckle realism, and finely-tuned performances. The shift at the hospital where the series takes place seems to be endless, and the latest events at the Pitt don’t bode well for the already-exhausted personnel. The latest episodes have been an emotional ride, but it was during Episode 13 when Dr. Robby finally lost it as things proved too much to cope with.Noah Wyle, star and producer ofThe Pitt, commented on this undoubtedly pivotal scene and said that he has been waiting to do this scene for half a decade.
Wyle spoke toTVLineabout the scene in Episode 13 where his character has to tell his stepson that he couldn’t save his girlfriend. It ends with Robby breaking down, uncontrollably sobbing, and sitting on the floor while chaos is still building up outside the improvised morgue. It is one of the several poignant moments of the show, but so far, Robby had been seen as the unbreakable leader. He previously displayed some panicked moments, but it was this contact with his stepson that ultimately broke him:

“I think we’ve been watching this come all day, and that it was one factor that didn’t line up. If the stars had aligned slightly differently, maybe this could have been averted. But it’s all coming at once in that room, and to whatever degree Jake holds Robby responsible, Robby holds himself ten times more responsible even if there’s nothing he could have done. Just the fact that he couldn’t perform the miracle is enough to put him into a shame spiral.
“And then having that potentially sever the one familial tie, the one anchoring relationship that he feels good about, is this proverbial straw that breaks the camel’s back… I’m a little funny, you know, I look at days of work like that like Christmas morning. I can’t tell you how much I was looking forward to that day. I’ve been waiting for that day for five years. A day where I could go in there and one-to-one channel my own pent-up grief, disappointment, anger, frustration, fear that I carry.”

The Pittisn’t Wyle’s first foray into the medical drama genre. Those familiar with his work rememberhis performance as John Carter in the NBC proceduralER. Nevertheless,The Pittis an extremely different show that breaks the mold of its genre peers. It has also given Wyle an opportunity to show his acting skills, and many already mention his performance as one of the best of the year on television.

It’s exactly the kind of work that turns me on. It’s such fine-brush work. It’s really detailed.
