Casting any superhero is a tough job. There are many ‘what ifs’ in superhero casting history — ‘what if Jake Gyllenhaal played Spider-Man?’, ‘what if Nic Cage was Superman?’, etc. — and, now, there’s another one. A member ofThe Boyshas just revealed that he auditioned for the latestSupermanreboot.

On theHappy Sad Confusedpodcast,Jack Quaidrevealed that he auditioned for the role of Superman in James Gunn’s latest reboot. While he currently voices the character inMy Adventures with Superman, Quad conceded that he “didn’t get very far at all” in the live-action casting process, and admitted he is not exactly who people think of when they think of Superman. He revealed:

David Corenswet as Superman in Jame Gunn’s Superman

“I put myself on tape, and it went nowhere, and that’s fine. Like, that’s totally cool, specifically because, I actually know David Corenswet a little bit. We did a pilot years ago that never went anywhere. But he’s one of those people you meet, and you go, ‘Oh, yeah! Whenever they need another one, it’s probably gonna be you.’ That guy is Superman. I remember getting that audition and being like, ‘Yeah, sure, I’m the voice of Superman in a cartoon, but I don’t really think I fit the bill physically at all.’ And that’s fine, that’s totally cool. But it was cool to audition for something like that.”

Quaid also revealed that he wasn’t upset about not being cast in the film.

Superman

“I haven’t really called my shots, really, things have just — miraculously just found me, or I auditioned at a time when I was really right for something. It feels like luck in a lot of ways […] I don’t like to be like, ‘Next thing I want to do is this!'"

Who’s playing who in the new Superman?

Twisters Director Explains Why James Gunn ‘Lucked Out’ With His New Superman

Lee Isaac Chung had high praise for David Corenswet, who he directed in what’s hoping to be the blockbuster hit of the summer.

Set to kick off DCU’s “Chapter One, Gods and Monsters”,Supermanwill hit theaters in one year, on August 13, 2025. Filming is currently underway, andDavid Corenswet is set to portray the character(sorry, Jack). Gunn’s take on the franchise will likely set the tone for DC’s latest reboot; its DCEU initiative infamously concluded with last year’sAquaman and the Last Kingdom, which underperformed.

Luckily, it does appear that Gunn has a strong vision for the character and for the DC Universe. While Quaid may not fit into that vision as Superman, perhaps he can portray another character in the future. After all, there are literally thousands to choose from — Quaid may still get his wish to be in another superhero franchise.
