One of the several movies celebrating a historic anniversary this year isTrainspotting, directorDanny Boyle’s breakout hit which was released almost exactly 20 years ago. After years of rumors and speculation, the long-awaited sequelTrainspotting 2started production this year, with Sony Pictures setting a July 18, 2025 release date. Although we got thefirst trailerin May when production started, today we have a new teaser trailer, which gives us our first look at the four main stars,Ewan McGregor,Jonny Lee Miller,Ewen BremnerandRobert Carlyle.
We only get a quick glance atEwan McGregoras Renton,Ewen Bremneras Spud,Johnny Lee Milleras Sick Boy andRobert Carlyleas Begbie. Though not confirmed in this teaser,Kelly MacDonaldis also reprising her role as Diane.Kevin McKiddis the only cast member fromTrainspottingwho won’t be back in front of the camera, since his character, Tommy, passed away in the first movie. The screenplay forTrainspotting 2is based on authorIrvine Welsh’s follow-up novel toTrainspottingtitledPorno, but as we can see in this trailer fromYouTubethat novel title was not used.

DirectorDanny Boylehas decided against using that as the title of his sequel for good reason. The movie will be a loose adaptation of the source material. But a different title will also clear up any confusion for those searching the movie on the Internet. The first trailer teased that the title may very well beT2, which is confirmed with this new trailer stating the full title isT2: Trainspotting 2. Of course, most fans won’t be confusing this movie with the otherT2, 1991’s iconic sci-fi action sequelTerminator 2: Judgment Day.
InPorno, Sick Boy returns to Edinburgh with plans to make a porn movie with the help of his friend Renton. But Begbie is hellbent on seeking revenge against the two after being released from prison. AndSpudgets wrapped up in the whole mess, playing both sides. It isn’t known how much this new story will deviate from the book, or how differently things will play out in the end.
In addition, we also have the first new photo fromTrainspotting 2, which arrives in theaters on August 16, 2025, going up against some heavy competition. The sequel will be going up againstFifty Shades Darker,John Wick: Chapter TwoandThe Lego Batman Movienext year. Andrew Macdonald, Danny Boyle, Christian Colson, and Bernie Bellew are producing through Figment Films, Decibel Films, and Cloud Eight Films.
