Production started last week on the new CBSseriesSupergirl, with the network releasing thefirst official photos on Fridayfeaturing starMelissa Benoistin her fullSupergirlcostume. Today,The Live Feedreports that Malina Weissman has been cast as a young Kara Zor-El. The actress will guest star in the pilot episode, confirming speculation that theDC Comicsseries will flash back to her childhood years. She most recently appeared on the big screen as a younger version ofMegan Fox’s April O’Neil inTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
What isn’t known at this time is if the young Kara will be on Earth or on her home planet of Krypton. Kara was born on Krypton but was sent to Earth before her home planet was destroyed. After arriving on Earth, Kara was taken in by her foster family the Danvers, who taught her to be cautious of using her incredible Kryptonian abilities.Melissa Benoist’s Kara is 24 years old, working as an assistant to CatCo founder Cat Grant (Calista Flockhart), as she starts to embrace her abilities and become the hero she was always born to be.
The cast also includesMehcad Brooks(James Olsen),Laura Benanti(Alura Zor-El),Chyler Leigh(Alexandra “Alex” Danvers),Jeremy Jordan(Winslow “Winn” Schott),David Harewood(Hank Henshaw) andFaran Tahir(The Commander).Dean Cain(Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman) andHelen Slater(Supergirl) have also been cast in surprise roles.Greg Berlantiand Ali Adler wrote the pilot episode, which Glen Winter is directing, and will serve as executive producers alongside Sarah Schechter andAndrew Kreisberg.
