Star Wars: The Force Awakens' quest for worldwidebox officesupremacy continues, with the blockbuster taking in $14.5 million overseas on Monday.Deadlinereports that, while that total was down 63.5% from the previous Monday, since many children are now back in school after the Christmas holiday, the tally was still enough to propel the movie pastFurious 7($1.515 billion) andMarvel’s The Avengers($1.519 billion) to become the fourth-highest grossing movie of all time, worldwide.Star Wars: The Force Awakens' global take now stands at $1.536 billion, with $750.2 million domestic and $786.1 million from international markets.
Star Wars: The Force Awakensnow only trailsJurassic World($1.669 billion),Titanic($2.186 billion) andAvatar($2.788 billion) on the all-time worldwide box office charts. This was all accomplished in just its first three weeks in theaters, and without the help of one of the biggest international markets, China. The blockbuster is set to open in Chinese theaters January 9, which could putStar Wars: The Force Awakensin position to breakAvatar’s six-year record for highest-grossing movie of all time. It is already poised to take the domestic record ($760.5 million) very soon, but it will certainly need a bit more longevity to break the global mark.
Internationally, the U.K. is still proving to beStar Wars: The Force Awakens' biggest market as the UK leads with $146.9 million. Other top markets are Germany with $83.3 million, France with $70.6 million, Japan at $55.7 million and Australia with $51.7 million. Its international take of $786.1 million is currently the fifth best haul of 2015, behindMinions($821.2 million),Avengers: Age of Ultron($946 million),Jurassic World($1.016 billion) andFurious 7($1.162 billion).
TFAstill has a long way to go before its theatrical run is over, so it’s certainly possible that it could shatter every major box office record before it leaves theaters. If it hits its current $55.2 million projection for this coming weekend, it will have broken another one ofAvatar’s records, securing the highest fourth weekend record, which currently stands at $50.3 million.Avatar, which played in theaters for a whopping 34 weeks, hold the records for the highest fourth weekend all the way through the highest 12th weekend.
Can anything stopStar Wars: The Force Awakens? At the moment, it seems not, but the weekend of January 15 could be its biggest test yet.
