It’s a good day for those who enjoy a galaxy far, far away in animated form. Disney Channel has officially renewedStar Wars Resistancefor a second season, which is set to debut in fall 2019. But before that happens, we’ve still got the second half of the first season to get around to. On that front, Lucasfilm has released a brand new trailer for the show’s mid-season return, which promises to bring a familiar villain into the fold, in addition to heavily connecting the series to the events ofThe Force Awakens.
The decision forDisneyto renewStar Wars Resistancedoesn’t come as a big surprise. Prior to this, Lucasfilm has had a lot of luck with their animated Star Wars offerings includingThe Clone WarsandRebels, which wrapped up its very successful four-season run last year. It’s also important because this is one of very few small screen Star Wars projects not being developed for the Disney+ streaming service, which is set to launch later this year. The service will be home to live-action Star Wars shows likeThe Mandalorianand theRogue Oneprequel series centered on Cassian Andor. The final season ofThe Clone Warsis also set to debut on Disney+.
As for the trailer for the mid-season return, it packs a lot of action into a small window. The trailer sees theFirst Orderbeefing up their presence on the Colossus. Kaz is, understandably, wary of this prospect. We also get some major crossover with the events ofThe Force Awakens, as General Hux shows up. And we even get a glimpse at Starkiller Base prior to its destruction. Beyond that, there areplenty of space battles, one-liners and other such touchstones we’ve come to associate with the franchise to go around.
For years, the franchise has been mostly associated with its big screen endeavors. However, with the live-action shows gaining more and more attention as they draw nearer, in addition to the positive reactionsLucasfilmhas enjoyed for their animated efforts, Star Wars is increasingly becoming a fixture on the small screen and, as hard as it may be to think about, TV could wind up being the future for the franchise. That’s not to say the movies will ever stop, but TV could end up overshadowing the movies in the future if this keeps up.
