Now thatJoss Whedon’sAvengers: Age of Ultronis in theaters, the director is essentially parting ways with Marvel, with the filmmaker recently expressing his desire to start writing his own new material. While he doesn’t have any confirmed projects in the works, a new report claims that Disney and LucasFilm are courting him to direct one of theStar WarsAnthology movies.Gareth Edwardsis directing the first spinoff,Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One, which starts production this summer and hits theaters next December, but it’s possible thatJoss Whedoncould be courted for theStar Wars Anthology: Boba Fett Movie, whichJosh Trankrecently backed out of.
It’s worth noting that this rumor originated at the Get Your Geek On Podcast, where the host admitted to creating this rumor as a joke, to see how quickly a story like this would spread across the Internet. However, various sites are reporting that “something” is happening with LucasFilm andJoss Whedon, but what that “something” is remains a mystery. Still, no talks or discussions have been confirmed by eitherJoss Whedonor Disney/LucasFilm, so we’ll just have to wait and see if it turns out to be true or not. There is even speculation that the director deactivated his Twitter profile as a “smokescreen” so he could secretly engage in talks with theStar Warsteam.

For those wondering ifJoss Whedoncould be in the mix for directingStar Wars: Episode IX, this report claims that is “probably not” the case. While it was initially believed thatJ.J. Abramswould only directStar Wars: The Force Awakens, afterRian Johnsonsigned on to write and directStar Wars: Episode VIII, the director is now open to returning for the final installment, and the directing gig is said to be his to turn down. It’s also possible thatJoss Whedonmay be courted to direct and/or develop the long-rumoredStar Warslive-action TV series, which will supposedly debut after this new trilogy completes its run in 2019. Given his prolific TV resume that includesBuffy the Vampire Slayer,FireflyandMarvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., it’s certainly possible that Disney/LucasFilm would want him to shepherd this rumored series, but, of course, it’s all speculation at this point.
