Josh Gad is taking one final run at Daisy Ridley to get Star Wars spoilers out of her. Gad co-starred alongside Ridley inMurder on the Orient Expressand, ahead of the release ofThe Last Jedi, he posted several videos, in which, he tried his very best to get information out of her about the movie. Now, ahead of the release ofStar Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Gad is at it again, and he’s brought a star-studded cast to help him out on his mission.
Taking to his various social media channels,Frozen 2starJosh Gadshared a video which, at first, seems like a relatively standard promo for the movie. It quickly turns into another attempt at gaining intel. Anna Kendrick, Tony Hale,Tom Holland, Awkwafina, Sterling K. Brown, Kumail Nanjiani, Tina Fey and a host of other famous faces pop in to try and get Daisy Ridley to spill the beans onStar Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Even some of her Star Wars franchise friends, such as Pedro Pascal and Gina Carano fromThe Mandalorian, as well as Alan Tudyk and Diego Luna fromRogue One, pop in to take a crack at it. Director J.J. Abrams and Ridley’s co-star John Boyega show up as well.
Amongst the questions asked were the obvious ones, such as who areRey’s parents? And is Skywalker plural or singular? Who istheSkywalker? Tina Fey hopped in with a less expected question, as she pitched herself as a droid whose only function is to make grilled cheese sandwiches. But did anyone manage to get anything out ofDaisy Ridley? Not really. The most she gave up was when John Boyega asked about Rey’s parents. At which point, she explained that he already knows the answer, since he’s in the movie. This heavily implies we’re going to find out when Episode IX hits theaters.
For the most part, this was just an exercise in good-natured fun and creative marketing. With a movie like this, it’s difficult because actors and filmmakers have to constantly dance around questions they can’t answer, and journalists have to try and find clever ways to pry information out of them. It can be a little exhausting. So, why not just have fun with the whole thing instead? In that way, this video is refreshing.
This does get to the heart of the matter though, which is that this movie has a lot it needs to accomplish. Not only does it need to answer a great many questions that are currently hanging in the air, but it also needs to provide a satisfying conclusion to the entire Skywalker saga, a nine-movie franchise spanning more than four decades. That’s no easy task. We’ll see if J.J. Abrams and the cast managed to pull it off whenStar Wars: The Rise of Skywalkerhits theaters on December 20.
