With just 11 days untilStar Wars: The Force Awakensdebuts, new footage has been released in two TV spots and a preview that focuses on Rey (Daisy Ridley). The featurette, courtesy of CBR Trailers, originally aired on ABC, where the actress reveals that her character is a scavenger from the planet ofJakku. The actress also reveals that she hopes both men and women alike can find something they relate to in Rey, whenStar Wars: The Force Awakenshits theaters on December 18.

We know thatStar Wars: The Force Awakenswill be just the beginning, with two more sequels and three spinoffs coming to theaters over the next few years. While there are several answers fans are waiting for, it seems we may not get all the answers we’re looking for inStar Wars: The Force Awakens. ProducerKathleen Kennedyadmitted toVarietythat they don’t have “every single detail mapped out” yet, while starJohn Boyegasaid there is still much he doesn’t known about his character, Finn. Here’s what the actor had to say, sharing a theory he heard from one of theStar Warsprequel trilogy stars.

Force Awakens

“I didn’t know much going in. I just remember during my time screen-testing, I was like, toDaisy [Ridley], ‘there’s no way that our stories are so simple,’ and we still don’t know! So I’ve still got some conspiracy theories as a fan as to where Finn comes from and I’m still trying to figure that out, but I like that it’s a mystery. I was at a party and someone behind me just tapped me on the shoulder and was like ‘Yo, black Jedi!’ I turned around and it wasSamuel L. Jackson. He was like ‘You’re my son!'”

BothFinnandRey’s surnames have been purposefully withheld from fans, leading to speculation that they could be the offspring of previously-established characters in theStar Warsuniverse. SinceJohn Boyegasays he’s still trying to figure out who his character is, it seems that we won’t learn what his last name is inStar Wars: The Force Awakens. Perhaps that information is being saved forStar Wars: Episode VIII, withKathleen Kennedyrevealing that the stars will start shooting in January.Oscar Isaacalso revealed that his own Guatemalan heritage played a role in developing his character, Poe Dameron.

Star Wars

“After we started filming, I was talking a bit about where could Poe have been. At the very end of ‘New Hope,’ the medal ceremony, one of Guatemala’s claims to fame is that that last shot where the ships are leaving, where you see the temples, was shot in Guatemala. For me, the fact that I was born there and that’s a rebel base and I’m playing a Resistance fighter, maybe Poe was there, that’s where he’s from, and then this comic book comes out in ‘Shattered Empire’ where Poe’s parents ended up going to Yavin 4 and making sweet love. So that’s an amazing thing, if the first time you’re talking about where your character’s gonna come from, ends up in a comic book … it feels like we’re creating these things together.”

The Shattered Empire comic is part of the expansive series known as Journey toStar Wars: The Force Awakens, which is part of the franchise canon. We’ll be sure to keep you posted as soon as more details emerge about these new characters inStar Wars: The Force Awakens.
