Inspired byBarack ObamaandMichelle’s first date,Southside with Yourecounts the eventful summer day in 1989 when a young law firm associate namedBarack Obama(Parker Sawyers) tried to woo lawyerMichelle Robinson(Tika Sumpter) during a daylong date that took them from the Art Institute of Chicago to a screening ofSpike Lee’sDo the Right Thingto the site of their first kiss outside of an ice cream parlor. Three years after their now infamous first date,BarackandMichelle Obamawere married in 1992, and 16 years later, they moved intoThe White House. The couple will celebrate their 24th wedding anniversary this October. This new trailer debuted through theRoadside Attractions YouTubepage.

Richard Tannemakes his feature directorial debut onSouthside With You, working from his own screenplay. The filmmaker had previously written the 2014 indie comedyWorst Friends, along with a number of short films. He also created the TV seriesCinema Cool, and he has a project in development calledThe Romans, which he co-wrote withTravis Baker.
