Oscar-winning actorSean Pennhas declared thathe has spent 15 years “miserable” on movie setsand has not had a “good time” filmingsince 2008’sMilk. The acclaimed biographical drama earned the actor his second Academy Award for Best Actor and follows Penn as real-life gay rights activist and politician Harvey Milk, thoughit’s a role that the actor does not believehe would be able to play todaydue to “tremendous overreach” and timidity in Hollywood.

“No. It could not happen in a time like this. It’s a time of tremendous overreach. It’s a timid and artless policy toward the human imagination.”

Speaking withThe New York Times, Penn stated that he could no longer play the role of Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man elected to public office in the U.S., in today’s Hollywood due to the push for straight actors tono longer play LGBT+ characters on screen. While many argue that this has been done because there simplyaren’t many queer rolesin major productions, and thus those roles should be played by actors from the LGBT+ community, Penn feels that it is, in fact, because of restraints being made on imagination in the current climate.

Continuing, Penn reflected on his feelings of misery while making movies, saying he felt like “an actor who is playing a leading role and is a known actor and is being paid well [and] has a leadership position on a film and you’ve got to show up with energy and be a bodyguard for the director in some way.”

“I was faking my way through that stuff and that was exhausting. Mostly what I thought was just, ‘What time is it? When are we going to get off?’…I was sure it was done, but I didn’t know how I was going to keep my house running or travel freely or things like that if I stopped.”
