In all of pop culture,Stranger Thingsseason 2 may be one of the most highly-anticipated returns in 2017. The Netflix series absolutely exploded last year when the first season debuted on the streaming service. And the eight episodes weren’t nearly enough to satisfy the craving audiences have. Season 2 is currently in production, and the show has added a few new cast members, includingGooniesstarSean Astin. We’ve heard his teased before, but there is a little bit of mystery swirling around this Hawkings newcomer. Like most things about the show’s second season, we don’t yet know the whole truth. But now more details about his role have been revealed.

Hollywood Lifereports these newStranger Thingsseason 2 details, which they were privy to during aStranger Thingspanel for a convention that took place on a cruise ship called Fan2Sea. That certainly fits in with the TV show’s strange theme.David Harbour, who plays police chief Hopper on the streaming hit, spoke a bit aboutSean Astin’s character, who is named Bob Newby, as well as offering some additional details aboutStranger Thingsseason 2. Here is what he had to say.

“We have Sean Astin… he’s Winona’s new boyfriend, much to the chagrin to the Chief of Police. It’s a year later in the story, so there are several things that happened last year, like Will has come back, there are certain people in the town that know what happened, and then certain people that don’t know what happened. So there’s a lot of fall out with who knows what.”

In addition toSean Astin,Stranger Thingshas also addedPaul ReiserandLinnea Berthelsen. Prior to this, it had been revealed that Bob Newby went to highschool with Joyce (Winona Ryder) and Hopper, and has been described as a former nerd that now manages a RadioShack. He often interacts with the young boys who headline the show, selling them batteries for their walkie-talkies and other electronics that come in useful. Details about season 2 of the series have been really hard to come by, so even havingDavid Harboursay that the series will pick up a year later is something we can latch on to. The actor also talked a little bit about everyone’s favoritedead girlBarb, who most definitely is dead and will not be back for the new season. However, her presence, orlack of presence, will still be felt by her best friend Nancy. Here is whatDavid Harbourhad to say about it.

“The question and the feelings that Nancy has that no one ever cares about her friend Barb, are very much present in the beginning of the season.”

So without saying much, it seems like the new season ofStranger Thingsis going to be dealing quite a bit with the fallout from the first season, which could be an interesting way to go with it, as opposed to just sweeping some of that stuff under the rug and moving onto a new adventure. Outside of the new additions to the cast, save for Barb, the entire core cast is expected to return forStranger Things Season 2. In addition to seeingSean Astin,Paul Reiser,Brett GelmanandLinnea Berthelsenbring something new to the table,Gaten Matarazzo,Caleb McLaughlin,Finn Wolfhard,Millie Bobby Brown,Winona Ryder,Natalia DyerandDavid Harbourwill all be back.

Not a lot is known in terms of specifics aboutStranger ThingsSeason 2, but we do know that it will be 9 episodes instead of 8 and that it will be coming sometime this summer. The show is currently in production and will hopefully air sooner rather than later, but Netflix has yet to announce an official release date. Granted, Netflix will probably want to capitalize on the feverish desire for the show while they can, so they won’t likely make us wait any longer than they have to. We will be sure to keep you up to date as more information becomes available.
