ScrubscreatorBill Lawrenceis bringing back the medical comedy 15 years later after the show ended witha notoriously disliked final season. Despite having the opportunity to retcon that ninth season in different ways, Lawrence says the upcoming reboot will honor the controversial events of Seasn 9, which mainly focused on a new set of characters (in a new location) — something that wasn’t fully embraced byScrubsfans. While Season 9 did see most of the original stars return in guest roles, Donald Faison and John C. McGinley were the only two to return in recurring roles. That was obviously a bold choice (given the popularity of the show’s original cast)… and it didn’t pay off:Scrubswas canceled following its ninth season.

But, despite all that, Lawrence says there is room forScrubs' talented final season cast in the upcoming revival. During a conversation withTVLine, Lawrence defended his stance, saying, “I thought some of those actors and actresses were really starting to find their footing. Kerry Bishé, [Michael] Mosley, Dave Franco… they’re all still working for a reason. They’re all very good.” He continued:

“I’m not against seeing those people [again], and I think it would be fun to have one of them zip by, but that spinoff, if you remember, was supposed to be a med school, and those people that were going through it would then go off into the world and land as physicians in places here, there, everywhere. What I think we will really be focusing on is a place where some of our core regulars still work as physicians. And who are the new interns or residents at that hospital?”

Heather Graham Shares Her Thoughts About the Scrubs Revival

Heather Graham also discusses the new movie Chosen Family, which she wrote and directed, and working with Julia Stiles.

Along with Bishé, Franco, and Mosley, Eliza Coupe, who was introduced during the show’s eighth season, led the series' ninth season. Prior to that shift, the dramedy followed the lives of medical interns and residents at the fictional Sacred Heart Hospital, primarily focusing on the experiences of Doctor John “J.D.” Dorian (Zach Braff), as he navigated the challenges of his career and personal life. The revival, according to Lawrence, will shift its focus back to J.D. Citing a dream that Braff’s character envisioned during the Season 8 finale, Lawrence shared:

I wonder if J.D.’s dreams all really did come true. That, to us, is interesting.

Scrubs Is Back!

Scrubsfirst aired on NBC from 2001 to 2008 before heading over to ABC, where it aired its last two seasons from 2009-2010. The series starred Braff, Faison, Sarah Chalke, Judy Reyes, Ken Jenkins, McGinley, and Neil Flynn. While Lawrence and the show’s beloved stars have teased a possible reboot or revival for years (and even a movie at one point),Scrubsfans finally got the confirmation they had been waiting for earlier this month:a reboot was in early developmentat ABC and 20th Television. Braff, Faison, and McGinley are among the cast expected to make a return, with others potentially joining the trio.

In October,Braff mentioned Lawrence’s busy schedule(he is one of the creators of Apple TV+’s hit dramedyShrinkingand developed the Vince Vaughn-ledBad Monkeyfor the streamer) as a significant hold-up for the revival. There was also the matter of Lawrence’s overall deal with Warner Bros. Television, but as this progress indicates, that’s all been worked out (perhaps because Lawrence will reportedly not serve asScrubs' showrunner should the reboot be ordered into series). All things considered, we can’t wait to see where the bromance between J.D. and Turk stands now! In the meantime, you canstreamScrubson Peacock hereor on Hulu through the link below:
