The streaming charts are an incredibly competitive battleground. More often than not, a deserving movie gets bested by a film that was maligned by critics and most audiences, but has gained a life of its own thanks to social media and memes. That’s exactly what’s just happened on the battlefield that is HBO Max (formerly Max), as the best horror movie of the year has just been topped by a glorified meme movie. For the past few weeks, Ryan Coogler’sSinners, starring Michael B. Jordan and Jack O’Connell, sat proudly atop the streamer’s top 10 chart. Since its release on the platform, the vampire horror movie has dominated streaming, with every other film fighting for second and third place.A Minecraft Moviespent multiple weeks in second place. However, the film recently proved that no one can stand up to the immense power of the Chicken Jockey, as it just bested Coogler’s vampiric outing for the top spot.
A Minecraft Moviecurrently holds the top spot on HBO Max’s weekly streaming chart. As a result,Sinnershas moved down a spot into second place. Both movies are among the biggest releases of 2025 so far.A Minecraft Movieshould need little introduction to internet-savvy readers, thanks to the litany of memes and viral videos that circulated the internet during its theatrical run. Younger viewers went crazy (literally) for the Jack Black-led adaptation of Mojang’s best-selling video game, with some fans even bringing live chickens to screenings.A Minecraft Movieopened in theaters on April 4and dominated at the box office, despite poor reviews and a 48% Rotten Tomatoes rating. The film raked in $955 million worldwide.

The Best Vampire Horror Movie in Decades Adds to Its $365M Box Office With Streaming Domination
Audiences are taking another bite out of Michael B. Jordan’s 97% RT horror smash.
Sinnerswas a slightly less financially successful affair. Although that is to be expected, considering it’s an R-rated horror movie. While it couldn’t boast live chickens in screenings (unless some overly keen fans attempted a blood sacrifice to summon real vampires), it was awarded the critics' seal of approval. The film holds a near-perfect 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, with the audience rating sitting just behind that at 96%. It also amassed a decent box office take of $365 million worldwide. The official synopsis reads:

“Trying to leave their troubled lives behind, twin brothers (Jordan) return to their hometown to start again, only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back.”
Will ‘Sinners’ Get a Sequel, Following Its Breakaway Success?
To callSinnersone of the landmark movies of the yearwould be an understatement. In a year that has already seen major superhero films and video game adaptations dominate theaters, with more yet to come,Sinnersholding strong at the top of HBO Max’s streaming charts is a great achievement. Horror is one of the most welcoming genres for original concept movies, but the pop culture reaction to the film has been unprecedented.
As a result, many were expectingSinners 2to be announced,or, at least, discussed, in the coming weeks. However, Ryan Coogler recently shot down the idea, at least for now.Sinnerswas theBlack PantherandCreeddirector’s sabbatical from franchise movies. So, making a sequel would turnSinnersinto yet another franchise under Coogler’s belt. However, he is set to return to the world of major IPs very soon withBlack Panther 3, which is in development at Marvel Studios.
