WithBlack Pantherconfirmed to return in the MCU, with Letitia Wright set to play the character inAvengers: Doomsday, and Ryan Coogler working onBlack Panther 3, rumors have circulated online about Marvel Studios replacing the late Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa. Following Boseman’s passing in 2020, Marvel Studios vowed not to recast the character inBlack Panther 2: Wakanda Forever, with his death being written into the film’s story. Five years later, Marvel Studios apparently wants the beloved character to return to the big screen. Many actors have been rumored and fan-cast for the role, butF1star,Damson Idris, might legitimately be in the running… at least, his nervous reaction to the casting seems to suggest so.
During a recent appearance on theToday Showto promoteF1, which also stars former Marvel star Brad Pitt, Damson Idris was asked about the rumorssurrounding hisBlack Panther 3casting.Upcoming Marvel movies are some of the most secretive projects in Hollywood. As a result, Damson Idris wouldn’t have revealed the answer even if the rumors were true. But his answer left everyone who witnessed it feeling incredibly skeptical and suspicious. In a very nervous voice, Damson Idris quickly said, “Yes. No.”

‘Black Panther’ Spin-Off Will Bring Back a Key MCU Superhero… But Not the Way You’d Expect
The animated series will re-introduce a superhero that made his debut during the Netflix era of Marvel Television.
Damson Idris was then asked if he would take on the challenge of replacing Chadwick Boseman if he was “hypothetically” cast inBlack Panther 3. The actor was far more sure of his answer to that question, sternly answering “yes.” At the time of writing, Marvel Studios hasn’t revealed any plans to recast the character of T’Challa in the MCU. Letitia Wright’s Shuri (T’Challa’s sister) is the current Black Panther. ButBlack Panther: Wakanda Foreverrevealed that T’Challa secretly had a son, who is expected to grow up to bethe next ruler of Wakanda.

Is It Finally Time to Recast T’Challa?
Marvel Studios is caught between a rock and a hard place regarding the recasting of T’Challa in the MCU. The majority of the fan base is arguably against the decision. Chadwick Boseman first played the character in 2016’sCaptain America: Civil War, before receiving a standalone film, appropriately titledBlack Panther, in 2018. Boseman then returned forAvengers: Infinity WarandEndgamebefore his passing in 2020, during development onBlack Panther: Wakanda Forever.
T’Challa’s performance and the cultural significance of Black Panther receiving a standalone movie have cemented the character’s place in pop culture. Regardless of your thoughts on the actual movie, its cultural impact and importance cannot be understated. That significance is one of the main reasons why many fans are against Boseman being recast.

However, Marvel Studios has recast roles due to actors' deaths in the past. William Hurt played Thadeus “Thunderbolt” Ross in the MCU before his passing in 2022.Harrison Ford then took overthe role for this year’sCaptain America: Brave New World. As a result, many now feel it is time to recast the role of T’Challa, especially as he is one of the MCU’s most beloved characters.
