Riordan recentlyupdated his websitewith more information about how the series is progressing, and that included details of his visit to the production office, where he has been able to see the sets, costumes, and more. In his notes, he assured fans that the look of the series is being mostly taken from the illustrated edition of the first book in the novel series,Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief, but also brings something new for both long-term fans and those just discovering the franchise. Posting an image of a concrete floor, Riordan said:
“I would love to show you what the rest of the room looks like, but that is top secret, and it would melt your mind if you saw what the crews are constructing for us. For now you’ll just have to trust me: I got the full tour, and I was blown away.”
The Disney+ Series of Percy Jackson Can Fix What The Movies Got Wrong
Rick Riordan was not particularly impressed with the movie versions of his books, but as he detailed more about his trip to the set of the new series, it is clear that he has a lot more time for the Disney+ series. He went on to explain about his time at the production offices, and how the series is developing, continuing to say:
“After touring the stages, we explored the Percy production offices, where prep work is underway for the show. We met our costume designer Tish Monaghan, who was reading through the illustrated Lightning Thief to brainstorm for costume ideas (good move!) and Dan Hennah, our production designer, whose team is busy creating the visual world in which Percy will travel. His office walls are covered with beautiful artwork of places you would recognize from The Lightning Thief: Mount Olympus, the Underworld, Aunty Em’s, Sally Jackson’s apartment, and many more, all done in a way that is true to the story, but also fresh and exciting. Dan Hennah, by the way, is from New Zealand, and spent the past few decades working on the Lord of the Rings with Peter Jackson, so Dan knows a few things about bringing magical worlds to life.”
There are currently no actors cast in the series, but Riordan did reveal that he could take part in some of the in-person reads taking place to find the lead characters of Percy and his friends, Annabeth Chase and Drover Underwood. Filming on the series is set to start this summer, with the series making its debut sometime in 2023.
