During a recent interview with theLos Angeles Times, the executive producer behindRick and Morty,Steve Levy, stated that the series upcoming seventh season might be “even better” following the firing of co-creator (and the voice behind its two leads), Justin Roiland. While chatting with the news outlet, Levy (who has been with animated sitcom since its second season), stated:

“The work that we’re doing across the board has only gotten better.”

Rick and Mortywas created by Dan Harmon and Roiland and follows the various wacky adventures of mad scientist Rick Sanchez and his well-meaning grandson, Morty. The Adult Swim series first aired in 2013 and currently has six seasons.Rick and Mortyhas also been nominated for five Emmy Awards and won twice in 2018 and 2020.

While in the process of producing the seventh season ofRick and Morty,it was reported that Adult Swim has decided to let go of the sitcom’s co-creatorfollowing domestic abuse allegations. In a statement, Adult Swim confirmed their choice to fire Roiland and stated that the series was still planning to move forward.

Thestatementmade at the time read, “Adult Swim has ended its association with Justin Roiland. Rick and Morty will continue. The talented and dedicated crew are hard at work on Season 7.”

Rick and Morty Will Feature New Voice Actors as the Title Characters

Since then, it has also been announced that the upcoming seasonwill feature new voice actors, replacing Roiland’s various character roles on the show. While speaking to the LA Times, Levy aboutRick and Morty’sdive into the horror genre, the executive producer offered praise for the writers of the series saying, “We have some of the most talented folks I have ever worked with. It can get really challenging at times because there are often so many rewrites, and we really want to push the art.”

He added, “We also had some character design changes late in the game, but the artists and writers really work well together.”

Later on, the executive producer opened up about the challenges that arose from Adult Swim severing ties with Roiland. Levy admitted, “We had a rug pulled from underneath us. The only people we could lean on were each other. It would have been very easy to just say, ‘I’m done and I don’t want to do anything with this show anymore.’ But our crew said, ‘No, we’re not going to let one person drag down all of our hard work.’ This show is created by this team – this family of incredibly hardworking people, and we are going push through and show the world that we aren’t going to miss a beat.”

He wrapped things up by saying, “The work that we’re doing across the board has only gotten better. When the new season comes out, we’ll focus on how amazing it all turned out. We hope the fans will realize that this is the same old show, maybe even better!”
