All good things, even beloved regular things, must come to an end. After a tremendous run onCartoon Network,Regular Showis calling it quits. The upcoming eighth season of the show, which will air later this month, was confirmed by the network and the creators to be its final.
Cartoon Network announced on Tuesday thatRegular Showwould be ending after more than 250 episodes. The network took to theirTwitteraccount to announced that thefinal seasonwould be going by the titleRegular Show In Space, to coincide with the cliffhanger from last season. Series creator, writer and directorJ. G. Quinteltalked a bit about the show ending in a statement following the announcement.
“Making ‘Regular Show’ has been so much fun. We got to tell all of the stories we wanted to tell, and making the choice to go out exactly how we want to go out. We’re so proud and excited for people to see how we’re wrapping things up in a big, big way. We’re bringing everythingfull circle.”
Regular Showstarted as a student project forQuintelwhen he was at CalArts and was eventually picked up by Cartoon Network. The show started airing in 2010 and centers around the absolutely insane adventures of a blue jay named Mortdecai and raccoon named Rigby who work at a park. Other characters on the show included a talking gumball machine named Benson, High Five Ghost and a talking Yeti named Skips voiced byMark Hamill. From the very start, the show has been absolutely absurd, but the absurdity allowed the show to go to some very unique and interesting places over its run. Cartoon Network chief content officer Rob Sorcher had nothing but kind words to say about the show.
“From JG’s original pitch on post-it notes, through eight successful seasons and more than 250 episodes produced, ‘Regular Show’ has been one of the most original animated series of this generation creating indelible characters and signature comedy mayhem laced with heart. Our sincere thanks to this talented crew and cast for their incredible dedication, and I’m proud that they all agreed to go up in space together for one hilarious final journey.”
Theabsurdist natureofRegular Showshouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone who has followedQuintel’s career. He got his start with Cartoon Network writing forCamp Lazlo!, but it was when he became creative director for the short-lived but much belovedThe Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjackthat things really started to take shape. Though that show only lived for a couple of seasons, it was out of the ashes ofFlapjackthatRegular Showwas able to rise. He has been hard at work on the series ever since, even directing the TV movieRegular Show: The Movielast year.
Regular Showhas also garnered some critical acclaim during its run, winning a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Short-Format Animated Program in 2012 for the episode “Eggscellent.” It has been nominated for a total of five Emmys since its debut. Season 8 ofRegular Showwill be taking place entirely in space. The season 8 premiere ofRegular Showwill be on Monday, September 26 at 8 p.m. and will air weeknights through January until the finale.
