It sure sounds like it, and drectorBryan Singermay be the driving force behind this violent and sexy take on the iconic Marvel comic book character inspired by the works of Robert E. Howard. But when will we see Sonja making her triumphant return?
This summer’sX-Men: Apocalypsewill bring the currentX-Mentrilogy to a close, withBryan Singerat the helm. While 20th Century Fox hasn’t confirmed where the franchise will go from there, aside from the already-announced spinoffsGambitandWolverine 3, the director will step away from the superhero genre temporarily with20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, whichstarts productionthis fall. The filmmaker is also serving as executive producer onX-MenTV showsHellfireandLegion, but a new report fromBleeding Coolreveals he’s also developing another TV series based on a beloved comic book,Red Sonja.
The site reports thatBryan Singeris developing anR-ratedTV adaptation ofRed Sonja, which means the show is aiming for a cable network like HBO, Showtime, Starz, or theNetflixstreaming service. If the project moves forward, the filmmaker will direct thepilotepisode and serve as an executive producer with his Bad Hat Harry partner Jason Taylor, along with Solopist Films’Stephen L’Heureux. TWC-Dimension is financing the project, and Luke Lieberman, who currently owns the character, will also be involved.
The character was originally created by Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith, and loosely based on Red Sonya of Rogatino in Robert E. Howard’s 1934 short story “The Shadow of the Vulture”.Red Sonjamade her Marvel comic book debut in 1975’sConan the Barbarian#23. It isn’t known ifBryan Singerhas already enlisted a writer or not. And there is no mention of who might play the red haired she-devil.
Red Sonja was adapted for the big screen in 1985, withBrigitte Nielsenstarring as the title character andArnold Schwarzeneggerportraying Kalidor. There has also been aRed Sonjamovie remake in the works for several years, which hadRose McGowanonce attached to star andRobert Rodriguezset to direct. Over the years, there were rumors thatMegan FoxandAmber Heardwere circling the role. Last year, Nu Image/Millennium Films tappedChristopher Cosmosto write the script, but that’s the last we’ve heard about the movie remake.
Of course, thisRed Sonjanews has not been confirmed yet, but we’ll have to wait and see if this series does move forward on a premium cable network, if it is in fact R-rated.
