The 90s brought us a lot of great comedies that are still talked about today.Groundhog Day,Dazed and Confused,Friday, andCluelessare a few that come to mind, but there is one that often goes overlooked when being added to “Best Of” lists:My Cousin Vinny. Starring Joe Pesci, Marisa Tomei, andRalph Macchio, the film earned Tomei an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, and at the time, it was a box office smash. Now, almost 35 years after it made its world premiere, Macchio says there is the possibility that a legacy sequel could be in order.

Speaking with People at PaleyFest on Saturday, March 22, the subject of a reboot ofMy Cousin Vinnywas broached to Macchio, who recently found success starring inCobra Kai, the sequel series to one of his other beloved classics,The Karate Kid. While nothing has been made official, the 63-year-old actor did admit that it is something that’s being talked about. The trick is finding the right way to do it.

Discover why My Cousin Vinny deserves to be considered among the best law movies ever made.

Macchio portrayed Bill Gambini inMy Cousin Vinny, who – along with Mitchell Whitfield – is falsely accused of murder in a small town in Alabama. His big city cousinand newly-minted lawyer, Vinny (Pesci) comes to his aid, bringing his fiancée (Tomei) with him. Not only did much of the film’s humor come from the clash of cultures, butMy Cousin Vinnyis often cited by lawyers as being one of the most accurate depictions of the American justice system Hollywood has ever produced. The film holds a Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes of 85% from critics, while its Popcornmeter sits slightly higher at 87%. For Macchio, however, if the reboot were to work, Pesci would have to be involved in some small way. “He could FaceTime in,” he told People.

What Would a ‘My Cousin Vinny’ Legacy Sequel Look Like?

My Cousin Vinnyconcluded with Macchio and Whitfield’s case being dismissed after the real killers were eventually caught. There was no ambiguity about what happened, as everything was wrapped tight with a neat little bow on top. As such, Macchio and company could start freshwith a legacy sequel, coming up with a whole new story that doesn’t necessarily have to tie into the original, other than featuring some of the same characters.

For instance, the plot could see Macchio all grown up and now himself a lawyer after being inspired by the performance of his cousin, and in some type of hot water that he has to call on Vinny to help him solve. Maybe he’s got some kids who have found themselves in trouble with the law. Or, Vinny could now even be a judge for all we know, whom Macchio has to prove his case to. The possibilities are endless, really, and ripe for the comedic pickings.
