IfThe Officeever gets a reunion special, Rainn Wilson says he’d love to be a part of it. For the entire nine-season run of the hit comedy series, Wilson famously played fan favorite character Dwight Schrute. Although Wilson said goodbye to the role whenThe Officeaired its series finale in 2013, he still carries a fond appreciation for his character and his time spent at Dunder Mifflin. In fact, should the opportunity present itself, Wilson would jump at the opportunity to reprise the role of everyone’s favorite beet farmer. Speaking about a potential return toThe Officein a recent chat, here’s what Wilson had to say.
“I’d love torevisit The Office. I’ve told [creator and showrunner] Greg Daniels that I would love to do something. They’re gearing up for putting it on Peacock. Maybe someday we’ll do something. It’s funny, I hear things like, ‘We can’t do anything because we ended this show perfectly, and we don’t wanna do anything else.’ But then, someone will send some idea that’s just preposterous and I don’t know what to think. Hopefully, one day. The fans would really love it. That’s the thing that counts the most. The fans would really love to see those characters again and have an experience with them.”
Rainn Wilsonis leaving very little doubt that we’d see Dwight return ifThe Officegets a reunion special. Several other cast members have also expressed an interest in returning for a reunion or revival. John Krasinski, Jenna Fischer, and Angela Kinsey have all said they’d be open to the idea. Leslie David Baker went the extra mile by launching a Kickstarter campaign to fund a spin-off series following Stanley in retirement. The big question here is if Steve Carell would want to be involved, but it’s worth noting he did appear as part of a cast reunion for Krasinski’sSome Good Newswebseries earlier this year.
Presented as a mockumentary series,The Officefollows the daily lives of the employees of a paper company based inScranton, Pennsylvania. Its unique cast of characters was originally led by Steve Carell as eccentric manager Michael Scott, The ensemble cast also included Rainn Wilson, John Krasinski, Jenna Fischer, B. J. Novak, Mindy Kaling, and Ed Helms. The series has maintained its popularity with a strong cult following in the years ever since it went off the air, becoming one of the most-binged shows on Netflix for the past several years.
It’s no secret that NBC wants to seeThe Officereturn in some way or another. Last year, NBCUniveral’s Bonnie Hammer said on record that it is her “hope and goal” that they are able to develop anOfficereboot for thePeacock streaming service. Noticing the show’s immense popularity on Netflix, NBCU spent upwards of $500 million to get the streaming rights back for the series, andThe Officewill begin streaming on Peacock starting in 2021. The chances of a revival or reunion happening are likely to increase exponentially once the show begins streaming on Peacock, so maybe we’ll get an update on its progress early next year.
