TheVikingsfranchise may be over, but there is plenty of Norse action coming your way sooner rather than later. Fans of the historical drama series will be treated to a new offering from Prime Video that will give them theVikingsfix they need. Based on one of the most legendary Vikings in history,Bloodaxehas found its titular lead.
Deadline reports that Prime Video has cast Xavier Molyneux inBloodaxe, which hails from the creator ofVikings,Michael Hirst, alongside his son, Horatio Hirst. He will be playing the title character, Erik Bloodaxe, one of history’s “most famous Viking warriors.“Bloodaxewill not be connected to Hirst’s 2013 series, but expect it to be another epic entry in the historical drama genre. While the rest of the cast remains unknown, the series will be heading into production in Ireland this July. The official plot description forBloodaxe:

Bloodaxeis set to be produced by MGM Television, who also backedVikingsand the sequel series on Netflix,Vikings: Valhalla. Molyneux is an up-and-coming actor who was most recently featured in the long-running TV seriesNeighbours, as well as the 2024 romance dramaTake My Hand.Vikingsfeatured more familiar faces, but it is hard to argue thatTravis Fimmel, Katheryn Winnick and Alexander Ludwig did not become more household names after the acclaimed Norse drama blew up over the past decade. Molyneux will be joined by whoever is cast as his on-screen wife, Gunnhild, the Mother of Kings, as the leads ofBloodaxe.

‘Vikings’ Creator Teases New Norse Series
After creatingVikings, and producing the sequel series,Valhalla, one might think that Michael Hirst has explored everything the genre has to offer. After all, his beloved historical drama that started it all continues to bea staple for films and shows based on Norse history. However, Hirst intends to give audiences another journey in the familiar world with a totally new story that will include a breadth of exciting characters. As Hirst previously teased duringBloodaxe’s initial announcement, expect the Prime Video to re-enter a “fantastic world of Norse sagas” with “unbelievable stories” that are based on what happened in real life.
