Yesterday marked the final casting for the newPower Rangersreboot team, withBecky G.taking on the role of the Yellow Ranger. This arrived amidst a rumor that all of the new Rangers would have unique names as this movie introduced a completely different set of heroes. Lionsgate’s officialPower Rangers Twitterhas cleared that misconception up. They confirm that the big screen relaunch of the franchise will keep the originalMighty Morphin' Power Rangersnames, based on the characters introduced in 1993.
The new Rangers are Jason, Kimberly, Zack, Billy & Trini. Becky G. was the final piece of the puzzle, and will be playing Yellow Ranger Trini.Naomi Scottis Pink Ranger Kimberly.RJ Cyleris Blue Ranger Billy.Ludi Linis Black Ranger Zack. AndDacre Montgomeryis Red Ranger, otherwise known as the team leader Jason. No further plot details have been revealed, and it isn’t known how closely this iteration will stay to the original 1993Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers.
X-Men: First ClassandThorscreenwriters Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller are penning the story for this latest incarnation of the popular kids show. It’s being described as a modern reinvention of what’s come before it. The main plot follows a group of ordinary high school kids who find themselves infused with extraterrestrial powers. They must harness those powers and stop an evil force from taking over the world. Haim Saban, who created the original 1993 series, is back to produce. He will be joined by Brian Casentini and Allison Shearmur.
A report fromCollidersurfaced earlier this week, claiming the character names for all of thePower Rangershad been changed.Dacre Montgomerywas said to be playing Callum Oliver (Red Ranger/Tyrannosaurus),Naomi Scottwas said to play Priya Patel (The Pink Ranger/Pterodactyl),RJ Cylerwas marked as playing Brian Olson (The Blue Ranger/Triceratops),Ludi Linwas said to be playing Oscar Fernandez (The Black Ranger/Mastodon) and the latest addition, Becky G., was being called Teyana Jones (The Yellow Ranger/Sabre-tooth Tiger). Now, we know this information was completely erroneous. That calls into question every other rumor we’ve heard about the movie thus far, too.
The characters' animal war machines known as Zords will presumable remain the same. Though, we’re not sure what is happening with the costumes at this point. We can expect to see the entire new cast revealed soon, as they will appear in the movie. Though, it should be noted that no Green Ranger has been cast. We haven’t heard any casting for the main villain (or villains) yet, but it is known that the production is seeking out a big name to play either Rita Repulsa from the originalMighty Morphin' Power RangersTV show, or perhaps Replusa’s underling, Scorpina. It’s possible that both could show up. Previous rumors claimed that this new reboot would be a direct continuation of the latest TV incarnationPower Rangers Dino Charge.

The film will be released in theaters January 2017. It will mark the third time the franchise has been brought to the big screen following Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie in 1995 andTurbo: A Power Rangers Moviein 1997. Does it make you happier that they’re still using the original names?
