While some older Disney fans may find the live-actionLilo and Stitchto be a disgrace to the original animated film, the film’s box office success is a major green light for the studio’s live-action remakes. The remake ended up being a completely different version of the 2002 animated film, but still proved to be a hit with audiences today. WithLilo & Stich 2already in production, it’s clear that Disney is not slowing down on the trend anytime soon. However, there is one animated film in Disney’s catalog that Pixar CCO Pete Docter believes would not work as a live-action film.
Pixar’s 2009 animated tear-jerkerUpseems to be safe from the fate of most Disney animated films. Docter has proven his directorial chops with his oversight ofMonsters, Inc.,Up,Soul, andInside Out,which led him to becoming the CCO of Pixar Animation Studios. Recently, Docter appeared on comedian Mike Birbiglia’s podcast to talk about all things Pixar, and fans of the grumpy old man and young boy’s story got some potentially great news. Docter is well-acquainted with the difference between live-action and animation. The creative lead told Birbiglia thatUp’s main character, Carl Fredicksen, would have a harder time gaining audiences' sympathy in live-action.

“I wonder if some of the stuff that was likeable for a grouchy old man to do in an animated film would actually be like ‘ugh I hate him’ in live-action”
Disney Boss Reveals the Ridiculously Obvious Criteria Pixar Movies Must Meet To Become a Franchise
Pete Docter reveals two factors that justify the studio creating a sequel to their beloved animated classics.
Carl’s crabby demeanor isn’t the only apparent reason to not make a live-action remake of the adventure film.Upis a part of a group of Disney/Pixar animated films thatdeal with heavy, real-life problems and tonal themes. So, it could hit too close to home if made with real actors and real tears. However, with how Disney seems to love recreating fan-favorite films, fans can expect Disney to try its hand at a live-action remake at some point in the future.

Not All Pixar and Disney Hits Are Safe From Live-Action Remakes
Fans of the balloon-filled animated film can relax, knowing the Docter isn’t on board with a live-actionUpremake. Unfortunately, other beloved animated films are not safe from the modern Disney craze. Audiences already know that live-action versions ofMoanaandThe Hunchback of Notre Dameare in development. No matter how many live-action flops Disney acquires, it is determined to make a market for what some people call unwanted remakes.
Regardless of how people who grew up on classic Disney and Pixar animated movies feel, there’s no denying that Disney is profiting from sticking to the trend. Maybe after a few flops like the live-actionMulanandThe Lion King, the studio has found a more effective, and lucrative, way to turn loved animation into live-action.
