Fans ofDexterhave been spoiled by several new series in the franchise, but one of them has been dealt an unexpected killer blow despite previously being reported to be continuing for a second season.
Dexter: Original Sinacted as a prequel to the popular drama series, and after strong reviews, and the continued success of the Dexter universe, it looked like there was a second season on the way. Despite this being confirmed back in April,Varietyhas now confirmed that the series will not be returning after all and has been canceled after just one season. As per the report, sources told the publication thatDexter: Original Sinwas never fully confirmed for a second season and was instead “on hiatus” until a decision about its future was made. Following the completion of the merger between Paramount and Skydance, it looks like the time to make that final call has now arrived - unfortunately for fans of the prequel series.

Just over a month after the finale ofDexter: Original Sinleft fans wanting more, it was revealed that Season 2 would be bringing back the core cast for more stories from the early years of everyone’s favorite vigilante serial killer.
Premiering on Jun 15, 2025, and set fifteen years before the first season ofDexter,Original Sinfollows our Dexter Morgan (played by Patrick Gibson) as he learns to channel his Dark Passenger through the guidance of his adoptive father. As his skills for finding and dispatching people in society who deserve his kind of justice developed, the challenges of being a killer hiding in plain sight prove to be incredibly difficult for the youngster.

Season 1 was not the highest-ratedDexterseries, but still had a strong 76% fan rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Those who loved the show, and there were plenty, were delighted to hear that there would be more from the series, which was expected to run alongside the latest addition to the franchise,Dexter: Resurrection.
The ‘Dexter’ Franchise Is Now Back Fully in the Hands of Michael C. Hall
While having two strands of Dexter’s story would have been easy for fans to get on board with, it seems thatMichael C. Hall’s even more successful on-screen return as the character inDexter: Resurrection– after proving his younger self’s inner monologue inOriginal Sin- has possibly resulted in the prequel series biting the dust.
It is hard to argue thatDexter: Resurrectionhas been a much more accomplished success than many fans could have hoped for. AfterDexter,Dexter: New Blood, andDexter: Original Sinall landed both critic and audience scores of around 70-80%,Resurrectionlanded with an incredible 94% Tomatometer score and 86% Popcornmeter rating.

According to the same report, a writer’s room will soon be opening forResurrection’s second season, although there have been no further details on when we will see the show return to screens. In the meantime, fans can binge their way through all of Dexter’s previous misadventures on Paramount+, andDexter: Resurrectionwill air the finale of Season 1 on September 5.
