It seems that twoJean-Claude Van Dammes are worth oneJason Statham, as the Muscles from Brussels’ 1991 panned action thrillerDouble Impacthas become the most-watched movie onTubithis New Year, narrowly beating another resurgence for Statham’s equally panned sequel,Mechanic: Resurrection. Heading into 2025, this clearly proves that action is still the name of the game on free streaming platforms, just like it has been for several years now.
WhileDouble Impactinitially arrived on Tubi 12 days ago, the film lay low over the festive period before quickly ascending the chart as January 1 approached.Statham’s follow-up toThe Mechanichas been even more impressive, as it has now been on the platform for just under a month and has found itself challenging the top of the free streamer’s chart on several occasions.

The two over-the-top action movies could still swap places in the next few days, but January 1 also saw many more movies being added to the Tubi library, giving fans many more options to keep them entertained with some red-hot action on a cold winter’s night. Fans have already been flocking to several other titles that have just arrived today, including several from Van Damme’s extensive back catalog.
‘Double Impact’ & ‘Mechanic: Resurrection’ Make Great Bedfellows
Despite being released almost three decades apart, 1991’sDouble Impactand 2016’sMechanic: Resurrectionare a good double-feature for anyone looking to pass a few hours in the company of two big, strong men (or three if you count Van Damme’s dual role) smacking bad buys around for the fun of it. While neither movie fared well with critics, audiences just cannot get enough of the mindless brutality that both stars bring to their films.
Double Impactis a typical Van Damme outing, with the actor playing siblings Chad and Alex Wagner, who, 25 years after the death of their father, come together to take down crime boss Raymond Zhang (Philip Chan Yan Kin), who was responsible for their old man’s premature demise. However, the siblings are two very different people, and they find that their personal differences could ultimately stand in their way.

The film may be one ofVan Damme’s more memorable moviesof the decade, thanks in part to its Van Damme on Van Damme fight scene, but it certainly was not one of the most successful, although it did double its $15 million budget to be a box office hit. Critics scored the movie 33% on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences were slightly more impressed with a 43% score.
8 Things You’ll Find in Just About Every Jason Statham Movie
Jason Statham is known for a really specific type of movie, and fans wouldn’t have it any other way.
Jason Statham’sMechanic: Resurrectionsaw the actor teaming up with Jessica Alba in a sequel that played out exactly as you would expect if you saw the first movie. Reprising his role as retired master assassin Arthur Bishop, Statham goes into mental mode when his girlfriend (Alba) is kidnapped by an old enemy. After failing to carry out the hit that could save her, Bishop sets out to take down those responsible for forcing him back into a world he left behind.

Almost in a mirror of Van Damme’s movie,Mechanic: Resurrectionscored 31% on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer and 40% on the Popcornmeter. At the box office, the film made $120 million from its $40 million budget, making them almost equal in every respect. Not that it seems like fans can really separate them on Tubi, and their new success is proof – if needed – that you really cannot keep a good, or bad, action movie down.
