Ever since the epicAvengers: Doomsdaycast was announced back in March 2025, it became clear that Marvel Studios had no interest in following up withEternalsanytime soon. However, asCaptain America: Brave New Worldbrought back plot developments fromThe Incredible Hulkafter seventeen years along with several points from Eternals, it is clear that no character or concept is entirely off the table for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While theEternalsmight not have a role in the conclusion of the Multiverse Saga, Marvel might have plans for the team in what comes afterAvengers: Secret Wars.

During a Q&A with The Cosmic Circus' Alex Perez, the scooper hinted that he had heard rumors that Marvel Studios would revisit the Eternals followingAvengers: Secret Wars. When asked if the Eternals were done in the MCU, Perez said, “The Eternals are not done for. There’ll be more about it in the next saga.” Perez has no affiliation with Marvel Studios, so this should be treated as a rumor with a big grain of salt for now.

The Eternals' Future in the MCU Might Tie into Plans for The X-Men

Eternals, along withShang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, was one of the first major MCU projects of Phase 4 and the Multiverse Saga to introduce new characters and concepts to the broader franchise. WhileShang-Chi’s reaction was positive,Eternalswas more mixed to negative, as it earned a reputation for being the first MCU film to get a rotten rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Due todirector Chloé Zhaohaving won the Best Director Oscar forNomadland,Eternalshad great expectations put upon it, with some inside Disney hoping it could secure the MCU its second Best Picture Oscar nomination afterBlack Panther. Even though it managed to gross $402.1 million worldwide during the early days of moviegoers returning to theaters following the COVID-19 pandemic, it is often labeled a flop.

Eternals ended on several cliffhanger endings, with the Celestial Arishem spiriting away part of the team and post-credits scenes introducing Harry Styles as Thanos' brother Eros, and teasing both Black Knight and Blade. Although the movie takes place after Avengers: Endgame, the film’s lack of connection to other MCU projects means that its actual position in the timeline could be easily shifted if needed. Rumors heavily point to Phase 7 of theMCU kicking off The Mutant Saga, one focused on the X-Men, and that could potentially lead into an adaptation of a recent crossover comic book event.

Still from Eternals

From July to November 2022, Marvel Comics publishedA.X.E.: Judgement Day, a massive crossover event that pitted the Avengers, the X-Men, and the Eternals against a Celestial called The Progenitor, who looked to destroy the Earth, deeming the planet unworthy. The MCU now has two Avengers factions, Sam Wilson’s team andThe New Avengers formed inThunderbolts*, and with the franchise set to reboot theX-Men, an adaptation ofA.X.E.makes sense for the MCU’s future. It provides an Avengers-level threat that could unite various Marvel characters in a crossover film and redeem the Eternals as supporting players in future MCU projects. This would be similar to The Hulk, who, despite his solo film being a box office disappointment, became a central recurring character in the franchise by appearing in other movies and Disney+ series.
