Netflix is developing a new Ghost in the Shell series. The streaming platform is continuing its quest to add additional anime content by promising a new spin on the classic franchise. ANeon Genesis Evangelionseries is also on the way along with a newUltramananimated series, and a live-actionCowboy Bebopseries. These are some pretty big franchises that will more than likely be looked at under the microscope by fans who have loved the properties throughout the years.
TheGhost in the Shellannouncement comes after Netflix canceled the popular MarvelDaredevilseries as well asLuke CageandIron Fist. The streaming platform continues to add original content, not really looking back. As for thenew anime series,Netflixreleased a statement about the new series, which is officially titledGhost in the Shell: SAC_2045. The statement reads.
“Ghost in the Shellis going to reborn by changing itself into a new form– 3DCG. This time, Kenji Kamiyama and Production I.G will build a tag with Shinji Aramaki and Sola Digital Arts, who had been brought Japanese 3DCG animation to the whole world by his pieces like Appleseed series. It is a next-generation animation film and the firstGhost in the Shellmade by double directors.”
Ghost in the Shellhas been through a ton of changes and different versions over the years, so it will be very interesting to see what Netflix is going to do, and even more interesting to see if fans embrace it. The animated films and past TV shows have generally been well-received, but last year’s live-action adaptation starring Scarlett Johansson was pretty much panned. To be fair, the movie was pretty much doomed before it hit theaters due to the fact that the studio hired a white actress in the main role.
While the live-actionGhost in the Shellmovie left fans wanting more, they will more than likely be pretty excited to see that the people behind Appleseed and Stand Alone Complex are involved. Netflix didn’t reveal any additional information, other than the fact that the show will premiere some time in 2020. It’s a shame that they weren’t prepared to get the new series ready for 2019 to celebrate the 30th anniversary.
Ghost in the Shellstarted in 1989 as amanga series. In 1995, animation studio Production I.G started to produce the different versions of the animated series. One of the main themes of theGhost in the Shellfranchise is the idea that when human consciousness and individuality, aka the ghost, can exist independently of a physical body, a visual representation of ethnicity is no longer relevant. In addition to the TV shows, manga series, and movies, the franchise has also been the focus of some popularvideo games, starting in 1997 and going up to 2016. More news about theGhost in the ShellNetflix series will be announced shortly. This news was first announced by theNetflix Twitteraccount.
