It’s an exciting day forBeavis and Butt-Headfans as it has been reported that creator Mike Judge is relaunching the beloved animated series once again at Comedy Central. After an original run on MTV in the ’90s,Beavis and Butt-Headreturned to the network for a single-season revival in 2011. Now, America’s dumbest teenagers will be back for more hilarity for at least two seasons of a revival series, along with multiple specials and spinoffs, at there new home on Comedy Central.
“It seemed like the time was right to get stupid again,” saysseries creator Mike Judge, who will also be back to lend his voice to both Beavis and Butt-Head and other characters from the series. Reportedly, the series will follow the dimwitted youngsters “entering a whole new Gen Z world,” showing how these classic characters would react to today’s trends and hot button issues. TheBeavis and Butt-Headrevival is also said to feature “meta themes relatable to both new and old fans - Gen X parents and their Gen Z kids.”
“We are thrilled to be working with Mike Judge and the great team at 3 Arts again as we double down on adult animation at Comedy Central,” Chris McCarthy, President of Entertainment & Youth Group at Comedy Central, said in a statement released to the press. “Beavis and Butt-Headwere adefining voice of a generation, and we can’t wait to watch as they navigate the treacherous waters of a world light-years from their own.” Word is, Judge will also work with the network to develop potential spinoffs.
Beavis and Butt-Headoriginally ran for seven seasons between 1993 and 1997, with the movie adaptationBeavis and Butt-Head Do Americareleasing in theaters in 1996. The series followstwo teenage boys with an obsession for rock music, and although it’s filled with toilet humor, the show has also been commended for its hilarious social satire. The series returned for an eighth season in 2011 with another 22 episodes, but MTV opted not to resume with the show following the end of this run. Still, Judge had been vocal about his desire to continue the classic animated series elsewhere.
Moving to Comedy Central will hopefully provide a much better response for this newest iteration ofBeavis and Butt-Head, but considering the two-season order, it’s clear the network has absolute faith in the revival’s success. Maybe the problem with the failed 2011 revival on MTV was that the network had changed drastically since the last time the cartoon duo had appeared on the station, focusing more on reality-based television and less on music and music videos. Pairing up with something likeSouth Parkseems to be a much better fit forBeavis and Butt-HeadthanTeen MomandJersey Shore.
Just recently, Comedy Central ordered theDaria spinoff series Jodie. Oddly enough,Jodiecan be loosely considered as aBeavis and Butt-Headspinoff, asDariawas spawned from the show. OtherDaria-based spinoffs are also rumored to be in the works, so it seems Comedy Central is moving full steam ahead with their plans to fill their programming with more adult animated shows.
