‘Deep Cover’ Is Not Afraid to Land a Few Punches
Deep Covernever tries to hide what it truly is: a well-balanced comedy that takes place against a backdrop of crime and corruption. Fortunately, Kingsley never loses control of the tone achieved from the beginning, and it delivers laughs every minute. After some narrative missteps in the second act,Deep Coverenters a well-written final act that’s satisfying to the point of imagining what would happen in a potential sequel.
But make no mistake.Deep Coveris still a crime film, with enough violence to make some viewers squirm in disgust, especially when the beloved trio are forced to dispose of a body. The dramatic undertones are relevant when they need to be, but they remain secondary to the consistently fresh comedic storyline. It is a fine script, but nothing would have been possible without thechemistry of its central castof characters. Also worth highlighting is Paddy Considine. The always reliable actor steals every scene he’s in. And Sean Bean? Well, you can imagine what happens to his character if you’re familiar with the actor’s past.
