Pride and Prejudiceremains one of the most enduring and impactful works of Jane Austen, whose bibliography has spawned a myriad of adaptations in movies, television shows, and plays. Just this single book alone has spawned at least 16 different iterations of the story in movies and shows, and now Netflix is developing another one with an impressive creative team. A press release from the Netflix Tudum blog post revealed thatPride and Prejudicewould be brought to the small screen through a new six-part series adaptation. A cast and creative team were also revealed, with one star from the Apple TV+ seriesSlow Horsesamong the names.
Jack Lowden, who is most well-known for his role as River Cartwright inSlow Horses, was announced to be playing one half of the iconic couple, Mr. Darcy, in the adaptation, along with Emma Corrin as Elizabeth Bennet. Corrin recently made waves as the main villain in the Marvel Studios box office behemothDeadpool & Wolverine. Joining Corrin is Olivia Colman as Mrs. Bennet, with both actors previously working on the Netflix seriesThe Crown. It was rumored via a report from Variety that Daisy Edgar Jones was in consideration for the role of Elizabeth, though it’s now confirmed that Corrin nabbed the lead part.

Lowden’s casting as the famous literary character comes after his work onSlow Horses, opposite Gary Oldman and a talented ensemble, has put him in the spotlight. The series has received more attention and critical acclaim with each subsequent entry, keeping the actor busy filming future seasons. The character of River has displayed Lowden’s impressive and subtle comedic abilities, something that will surely come into play with his portrayal of Mr. Darcy.

Author Dolly Alderton will write the upcomingPride and Prejudiceadaptation, and the series will be directed by Euros Lyn, best known for directing episodes of shows likeSherlock, Doctor Who, andDaredevil. In a statement released by Alderton when the series was first announced, the writer would discuss what an incredible opportunity it is to bring the book to life in a new and exciting way, saying:

While there have been plenty of modern-day reimaginings of Jane Austen’s novels,Pride and Prejudicehas been revealed to be a “period-faithful adaptation” per Netflix’s official announcement. Moreover, production is set to begin on the series in the United Kingdom this year. After spending some time in development, Lowden’s addition has seemed to round out the cast and has the streaming service confident about moving forward with what will undoubtedly be an ambitious and exciting project.
