The remaining twin’s life will never be the same.Netflix’snew Australian thrillerEchoeswill follow Gina in the aftermath of her twin Leni disappearing shortly after their birthday. Gina doesn’t seem to know what happened to her sister but uncovers secrets that may give her an answer or a step closer to finding one.
Deadlineconfirmed in June 2021 that Netflix had ordered seven episodes for the series. In the months that followed, the website continued to announce the cast. Vanessa Gazy is the creator and writer of the show and most recently has worked on the seriesEden. Brian Yorkey, known for13 Reasons Why, and Quinton Peeples are the co-showrunners and executive producers on the series. Imogen Banks and Gazy also serve as executive producers.

Echoes: The Plot
Leni and Gina have a secret they’ve kept between them for most of their lives: they have swapped places with each other since childhood, each having a double life as the other. The two share their homes, husbands, and a child because of this situation. It’s unclear how often they swap places, though the opening scene of the trailer shows them celebrating their birthdays and one sister asking the other if there is something they’re hiding. While there’s a denial, the scenes that follow seem to explore the possibility that the sister was, in fact, hiding something from her twin.

As the trailer progresses, it looks like Leni may have been kidnaped, based on the evidence piling up. As Gina looks through a book, the words “You get both lives” and “Choose” appear on the pages, making it look like someone knew about Lina and Gina’s little secret and may have been blackmailing her. Who else in their lives could know their secret? And why were they only approaching Lina? Did she take advantage of their situation in a way Gina has no knowledge of?
A house on fire, a car on fire, someone burned in what looks to be a different car, and a dead horse all pop up in the trailer, giving the illusion that whoever or whatever came for Leni is going to do whatever it takes to cover their tracks, so no one finds her. Of course, Sheriff Floss (Karen Robinson) says what everyone might be thinking: maybe Leni ran away. From what isn’t clear, but it may be whoever is sending her the threatening messages. Maybe it’s whatever secret she was hiding from her twin. Maybe she ran from her husband, based on a passing comment by Gina.
The series is being promoted as a mini or limited, which usually means it will be limited to a single season. If that’s the case, all of these questions should have answers by the end of the final episode, and audiences will know what Lina was hiding and if she is coming back. With the number of limited series coming out recently, if it’s going for awards, it will likelyhave steep competition.

Michelle Monaghan portrays the twins Leni and Gina. Audiences may recognize her fromTrue Detective,The Craft: Legacy, or theMission Impossiblefranchise. Young Leni and Gina are portrayed by Hazel and Ginger Mason (The Blacklist), respectively, with Madison and Victoria Abbott portraying Leni and Gina as teenagers.

Release Date
The series consists of seven episodes and will be available to stream on Netflix starting July 07, 2025.
Everything Else We Know
The series was at least partially filmed in North Carolina last fall. A local paper,Port City Daily, wrote about filming taking place in Wilmington in October, filming on city-owned property and at a boutique. The paper notes it was one of eight projects in production in the area.
Echoesis part of an overall deal between Yorkey and Netflix, as discussed in the Deadline article. In an article byThe Hollywood Reporter, the creator Vanessa Gazy reveals how the series started and what their hope for moving forward with it is.
