Ted Danson andThe Good Placewriter and creator Michael Schur have recently reunited for a newNetflixseries,A Man on the Inside, which was released today to great reviews and popularity, as evidenced by the streaming service listing it as#1 of the top 10 television shows in the U.S. The series isbased on the 2020 documentary titledThe Mole Agentand features Danson in a new role as Charles, a retired professor who answers a newspaper ad asking for an assistant in a private investigation.

Charles is assigned to go undercover at a retirement community to find a missing ruby necklace. The premise lends itself to all sorts of humorous interactions, in no small part thanks to the stellar ensemble cast joining Danson. Mary Elizabeth Ellis (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) plays Charles' daughter, Emily, while Lilah Richcreek Estrada plays Juile, the private investigator who hires Charles and also pretends to be his daughter. Moreover, Brooklyn 99 alum Stephanie Beatriz plays Didi, the retirement community’s watchful executive director, who shares some of the most emotional scenes with Charles and several other talented actors.

Still from The Piano Lesson.

Witha 94% critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes,A Man on the Insidecontinues the hot streak of Schur and Danson’s working relationship, carrying over several themes and messages from their previous collaboration. There’s plenty for new and old fans of Schur’s work in this brand-new Netflix comedy that hides its deeper themes behind its fun investigative premise and charming characters.

‘A Man on the Inside’ Blends Mystery With Heartfelt Comedy

Similar toThe Good Place,A Man on the Insideis about second chances and finding a new lease on life. While the setting of the shows is entirely different, the retirement community is a backdrop that undoubtedly leads to a discussion of old age and how life can still be lived to the fullest despite its advancement. In the middle of this conversation about second chances is a mystery show that helps to strengthenA Man on the Insideas a perfect binge-watch on the streaming service. While the eight-episode first season neatly wraps up the mystery, strong viewership could lead to a second season. Netflix hasn’t announced a continuation, but the mystery box premise is always one that could last multiple seasons.Unfortunately,we do know that the streamer likes to cancel well-received shows, too.

One of the Best Movies of the Year Is Now Streaming on Netflix

The drama has 90% on Rotten Tomatoes and has quickly become an Oscars contender.

There’s also the uncertainty of whether the location and supporting cast would stay the same as the character arcs and secrets at the heart of the first season are fully resolved. Moreover, a tease at the end of the season promises a new mystery for Charles to help investigate, which could lead to a new setting and, in turn, an entirely new cast, similar to Hulu’sOnly Murders in the Building. Whatever the future of the series is, this Ted Danson mystery comedy series is clearly growing in popularity thanks to its unique premise and creative partnership behind the scenes. All that remains to be seen is if this strong debut stays steady throughout the holiday season.
