Along with David Corenswet’s Clark Kent, and a smattering of other DC heroes and villains, James Gunn’sSupermanwill also introduce the Green Lanterns to the DC Universe throughNathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner. Casual comic book fans may know the name Hal Jordan, thanks to the panned Ryan Reynolds-ledGreen Lanternmovie, but Gardner couldn’t be more different. While Guy Gardner is a hero and a very strong member of the Green Lantern Corp, Nathan Fillion recently revealed he’s not the typical superhero you’re used to.
During an interview withTV Guide, Nathan Fillion hyped upGuy Gardner’s big-screen debut inSuperman, and clued audiences in on what to expect from the extremely arrogant Green Lantern member. “You don’t have to be good to be a Green Lantern,” Fillion began. “You just have to be fearless.” As well as the power bestowed upon him from his ring and the Guardians of Oa, Fillion teased that Gardner has another superpower, although it’s nowhere near as useful. He said:

“I think if he has a superpower, it might be his overconfidence, in that he thinks he could take on Superman. He can’t!”

The hierarchy of DC Studios is about to change.
Thankfully, Guy Gardner won’t have to go blow-for-blow with the Man of Steel as the pair appear to be close allies in James Gunn’sSuperman. The first leaked set photos from the film’s production revealed Superman, Guy gardner, Mr. Terrific (Edi Gathegi), and Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced) celebrating after defeating a mysterious villain with a crowd of onlookers.Superman’s first full trailer also teased Gardner’s powers in action, although more will likely be showcased in the next trailer, which is currently in the works.
Guy Gardner Could Have a Long Future in the DCU
Guy Gardner is often considered to be the black sheep of the Green Lantern Corp. Hal Jordan is easily the most popular of Earth’s Green Lanterns, with John Stewart also having his own growing fan base. They are both the epitome of what it means to be a hero. But Gardner is a lot more complicated and, as a result, has his fairshare of haters among DC Comics fans.It will be interesting to see Fillion bring Gardner’s complex personality to life inSupermanand in projects beyond the DCU’s debut movie.
Following his debut inSuperman, Nathan Fillion is also confirmed to be reprising the role in HBO’sLanternsseries. The show, created by Seth Grahame-Smith (The Lego Batman Movie), will give Hal Jordan a chance at redemption in live-action, with Kyle Chandler taking on the role. Chandler co-stars withAaron Pierre, who will be the DCU’s John Stewart. The show has been described as a sci-fi take onTrue Detective, as the pair of Green Lanterns must solve a mysterious murder on Earth. It isn’t clear exactly how Guy Gardner will fit into the show, but more will likely be revealed when the first trailer and synopsis are revealed.Lanternsis currently in production.Supermanis set to release in theaters on July 18, 2025.
