The House of Mouse’s follow-up to its “roaring” 2019 box office success,The Lion King, will be available on the usual VOD platforms, including Prime Video, Fandango at Home, and Apple TV+ later this month. Despite its imminent release,Mufasa: The Lion Kingremains a strong earner at the box office despite dropping in theaters back on Jul 08, 2025. It is also poised to pass its animated competitor,Sonic the Hedgehog 3,at the domestic box office sometime this week.Disney fans can enjoyMufasa: The Lion Kingfrom the comfort of their own homes beginning on Tuesday, Feb. 18.
Mufasasecured the No. 3 spot in the weekend box office’s Top 5 with another $6.3 million (perThe Numbers) and ranked behind only the new titlesDog Man($36 million) andCompanion($9.3 million). That brings the House of Mouse’s latest big-screen effort to a total of $229.7 million (domestic), which will soon surpassSonic 3’s$230.6 million. In terms of the international stage, though,The Lion Kingfollow-up has far surpassed what the Jim Carrey and Keanu Reeves-led Sega adaptation has been able to accomplish financially.

Mufasahas brought in an impressive$653.3 million globally compared toSonic 3’sworldwide total of $462.6 million. Unfortunately, Disney must face the fact that Mufasa (Aaron Pierre) and Scar’s (Kelvin Harrison Jr.) animated adventure hasn’t performed as well as 2019’sThe Lion King($543.6 million) in the United States and Canada, nor around the globe. Nevertheless,Mufasais still a successful entry in the studio’s ever-expanding library.
How Does ‘Mufasa’ Rank Financially When Compared to ‘The Lion King?’
It seemedunlikelyMufasa: The Lion Kingwould be a box office hitwhen it began its theatrical run back in December 2024. However, even with a production budget of $200 million, and its hefty marketing/advertising campaign, Disney’s prequel/sequel will still make a profit when all the roaring is done. Unfortunately, it won’t match the success ofThe Lion King(2019), which went on to make $1.66 billion around the world.
In fact, the original, animatedLion King(1994) even performed better on the global stage thanMufasaduring its original theatrical run, thus far. The Matthew Broderick and James Earl Jones-led classic made $312.9 million domestically and another $458.2 million overseas for a worldwide total of $771.1 million (perBox Office Mojo). When adjusted for inflation, that global figure climbs all the way to a staggering $1.63 billion in today’s money.

‘Mufasa’ Is Good, But It Could Never Match the Original Movie in the Most Important Way
It’s not that ‘Mufasa’ wasn’t good but compared to ‘The Lion King’, did it really ever have a chance?
