Getting new or completed material fromGeorge R.R. Martinseems to be a tall order these days. But thankfully, his back-catalog of writing is a treasure trove thatPaul W.S. Anderson is dipping into for his latest projectwith spouse and long-time collaboratorMilla Jovovich, and first-time collaborator/not spouseDave Bautista. Their fantasy epicIn Lost Landsis slated to hit theaters February 25th, 2025, andMartin shared a new image, which you may see below, on his blog.
Anderson has brought us some worth-a-revisit spectacles, such as “Hellraiser-in-space"Event Horizon,The Three Musketeers, and, of course, theResident Evilfranchise. The filmmaker synthesizes the anti-authoritarian/anti-imperial sensibilities of French and British filmmakers with the high-energy balletic action of American and Hong Kong directors. Anderson spoke toDeadline back in SeptemberaboutIn Lost Lands:

“WithIn the Lost Lands, we’ve created a movie with a completely unique visual style and storytelling that uses cutting-edge technology to bring the story to life like never before. So, it was always important to me that it be seen on the big screen. That’s why I couldn’t be more thrilled that Vertical is bringingIn the Lost Landsto American theaters.”
The story ofIn Lost Landscenters around a powerful sorceress Gray Alys (Jovovich) who is tasked by a loveless Queen to venture into the titular lost lands to get her the magical gift of turning into a werewolf. Gray is accompanied by a mysterious hunter named Boyce (Bautista) who helps her battle the nightmarish creatures and foes that roam the dark world.

Paul W.S. Anderson Has Many Future Cult Classics
The screenplay forIn Lost Landswas penned by Anderson and producer/writer Constantin Werner, who acquired the rights to several of Martin’s short stories back in 2015. Anderson, whose films have not done well with critics over the years, has interestingly brought in quite a haul at the box office. Though not a single one of his films bears a fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, his works have collectively brought in over a billion dollars internationally.
Paul W.S. Anderson Says Paramount Was Concerned Event Horizon Would Tarnish Star Trek
Paramount execs were “shocked” by Paul W.S. Anderson’s film horror film Event Horizon with one even remarking that it could besmirch Star Trek.
Critics have skewered Anderson’s movies for their lack of subtlety, inelegant dialogue, and thin characters, but time has rehabilitated many of his early works.Event Horizonhas even been lauded as one of the best horror films ever made. An exercise in reframing his work as decidedly European suddenly makes his style and sensibilities make complete sense. As products of American cinema (and many are certainly marketed that way), their action style, anti-capitalist/authority themes (Aliens vs Predator, Death Race, Resident Evil, Soldier) and geometric visual aesthetic feel uncanny and out of place. But imagine his work was that of a French director like Jean-Pierre Jeunet directingAlien: Resurrectionand Anderson’s vision comes into focus.

With newly shared images fromIn Lost Landsand a release date announced, a trailer for the fantasy fetch quest is sure to follow soon.
